Pasties by Ku
Desert Oasis Woman
Posts: 5,604
Ku's paternal grandparents passed down this recipe to his mother. His grandfather hailed from Cornwall and stowed away on a ship at 13. He settled in the Upper Penninsula of Michgan, where he ran explosives underground in the copper mines.
This is a special winter treat and the first time it was EGGed!

Ku would say "It's a kilt, not a skirt!"
I agree with you

D'oh, I thought this post was about exotic dancer accessories.

Hahahahaha, I thought the same thing and was wondering if Ku's family was into covering nipples? I have seen some strange jobs and that one would have taken the cake! :cheer:
 :woohoo:
The pastries look wonderful!

They look great.Thank you,DarianGalveston Texas -
I vote for these to be cooked in Salado and he MUST wear his kilt there. It's known for the Scottish Gathering every year.Judy

very firm crust - not flakey
good eats :woohoo: -
I've been looking for a good, or any, pasty for years. No luck. Does Jon put the swedes in his? Or neeps? I'd love to take a trip to Cornwall some day. :P May we have his recipe?

Mrs. Hen,
Ku loves to wear his kilt anywhere!
He even wore one around small towns in Colorado last summer :ermm: I was concerned for his/our safety, but very well received everywhere we went :silly:
He mentioned he'd like to do some pasties at a fest -- Salado may just well be the testing grounds for a smaller version
He will be delighted to hear about the Salado Scottish Gathering! Does Leroy go to that one? -
got a date set???
that was sure a nice party, but Judy sure kept you busy

will try to pin him down on crust details -- I know it's salt, "a walnut size piece of shortening" and flour -- 2 cups?
pretty basic
will get back to you with more details

Loved those cornish pasties while in England ...they go really well with a pint of bitter...but I'm sure you know that already
-
not had the "pint of bitter" but a Guiness is probably close :woohoo:
may be the same thing
but will defer to you and Steve on this
-
Dow, Bitter is a beer that is usually associated with a town or village, as in a locally brewed product. Guinness, on the other hand, is a gift from the Gods. :P

Check out this link. Yes, we went but just one year. Something always seems to be happening on the same weekend.Judy

Steve, two very different categories & brewing styles....bitter is a pale ale with higher contents of hops & Guinness is a Stout where the key is the roasted malt or basically roasted barley, nothing to do with associations to towns or villages, not at this time & age anyway. Both brewed by many of the largest brewing corporations. Now, both are a gift from the Gods. :woohoo:

Darn it Beli!
There are a limited number of facts that I know (or can remember). You have to give an old guy a chance to get in there.
You are, of course, correct.

Steve......I didn't spend 3 years in good old England sitting on park benches
are you coming to Plano or Florida?? -
Per pasty:
1 cup flour
walnut sized lard/shortening/rendered beef fat
1/2 tsp. salt
1/3 cup water )more or less as needed)
roll out to pie pan size and fill 1/2 with
~ 1/4 cup to 1/3 cup each: beef, onion, potato
salt and pepper generously
seal and reseal edges: 1/2 moon shape
cut 3 -4 vents in top, about 1" in length
bake in 450 oven/BGE for about 50 minutes
edges will be lightly browned
let cool about 5 minutes, the cut in 1/2 using bread knife
Serve with Bitters brought back to you from Beli :woohoo: -
Beli, when I traveled about the U.K., each town usually had a locally brewed lager they referred to as "Bitter". It was pale, yes, but I don't recall them refered to as anything other than bitter, not Bud, Miller, etc. And yes, I admit I'm a Guinness addict!
-
Plano, for sure. Are you coming? That would be great!
-
U betcha
-
Yes see you there Steve I love Guinness too
-
Not sure about FLA yet but I want to go to Plano. It is in the spring right?
