new xl fire grate hole size

My old xl fire grate cracked into several pieces. Received a new one under warranty but the hole size has gone from 3/4" to about 1/4". Same number of holes just alot smaller. In the past I have never had a fire go out, now I can't get through a cook without fire problems. Anyone else experience this? Any ideas?

    I have a XL that has the smaller holes(no fire problems) in the fire grate and I started seeing the new XL's that had the larger hole grate and contacted BGE about it as I wondered if they was a reason for the change(i.e. better fire control or something like that)and Bruce called me and explained they have had both designs over the years in the XL, and varies owner's have asked for bigger holes or smaller ones, each having there pros and cons. I have never had any problems with the smaller holes, he also stated that some owners didn't like the larger holes because small chunks of lump would clog them up and you are having problems with the small holes....so who knows? Just ask for the larger hole replacement and see if they will send you one. Hope this helps.

    Try turning your small hole grate over so the smallest side of the hole is on top. This really helped me because it didn't funnel the ash into the tapered holes nearly as bad.
