Had a frustrating night last night, I was going to smoke some trout to make into a pate for a party on Friday, but went to start 'er up after work and found the bottom vent was frozen shut. First time it's happened to me, has anyone else experienced this?

I thought I'd give it a quick zap with the Mapp torch but couldn't get it lit, so, thinking it was out of gas, I ran down to the local Ace Hardware, bought another one, fitted it to the nozzle and realised instead it was the clicker that was bust instead. It was also Mrs. MA Egger's birthday yesterday and we were heading out to dinner, so I didn't have time to run back for another one or try other ways to unfreeze and light the egg, so I ended up doing the trout in the oven. Boo hiss.

I'm hoping for better luck tonight, I'm planning on doing a couple of butts for pulled pork. Looking on the bright side, no snow here in MA. Yet.

Sorry about the delayed meal. My MAPP clicker died years ago and I now use a $2 striker from a welding shop.
  • do you think it's safe to hold a match to the tip of the burner while the gas is on? I don't want to be included in this year's Darwin awards, but it's a cheap solution.

Yes, I've had the Egg bottom vent freeze shut.

Yes, I've lit my MAPP weed burner with a match. But, like Richard Fl, I bought a welding striker. Same flint has lasted more than 2 years.

Also, realize that MAPP and propane tanks can get cold enough that they won't provide enough gas to stay lit on really cold days. I've had tanks that would only stay lit maybe 20 seconds when being used outside in single digits.
  • Aha, I did not know that. It was about 15F here last night, maybe that was the issue. I'll be off hunting for a welder's striker. Thanks
  • That happened to me for he first time last night as well (funny, I live on the Cape.) I have used a long butane lighter to light my torch. Nice win by the Celts last night without Shaq/Jermaine/Perkins and a hobbled Rondo.
  • Nice win indeed, and with the Pats riding high, the Sox spending some cash and the Bruins OK, times are good up here.
  • Western Mass here and yes its been a great year for us new engalnders

That's why I store my MAPP in my house, right next to the door to my patio. I imagine that's a hazard, but for the past 40-some years, I've stored my propane torch (plumbing, etc) in the basement (cellah for you Mass guys :)) so I don't see a problem. If I can't use the MAPP because it's too cold, there's no point in having it.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!
