I just don't "get" breakfast on the egg.

Not trying to be argumentative here, but I just don't understand "breakfast on the egg". At all. I will admit that I'm not much of a breakfast guy, mostly cereal and fruit if anything. But I'm trying to understand the "why" (or why bother) of breakfast on the egg.

I do cook breakfast on occasion - mostly on weekends. I'll have bacon or sausage and eggs, omelets, pancakes or maybe waffles or French toast, but that's about it. As for the egg, I have enough trouble forcing myself to crank it up for a "real" meal in the evening. Can't imagine doing it for breakfast!!

Cooking on the egg, improves MANY dishes. No argument there. I just don't see the benefit of cooking any of the traditional breakfast cooks on the egg. So much so that I have never even tried it. Most are quick, griddled foods, ya know? For that matter, why cook anything on the egg (breakfast or otherwise) in a COVERED DO. I mean, what's the point? For those dishes, it seems to me that heat is heat and the stove or oven is much faster and easier - and every bit as tasty.

I'm sure there are some things you could have for breakfast that would benefit from being cooked on the egg (steak for your steak and eggs maybe), but for the most part, not so much. For those of you who cook breakfast on the egg, do you honestly feel that egged eggs, et al, are better? Or do you just do it because you can? I can't believe I'm the only one who feels this way, but who knows - I've been in the minority before! I'm open to being persuaded... but I think it's gonna take some doing. :)

  • Ah grasshopper, you have obviously not been introduced to pig candy. Seriously man, doing the bacon on the grid over a drip pan produces an amazing product. Poached eggs are really easy too.

Dude, I don't even know what pig candy IS!

  • My problem with breakfast on the BGE is that I ruin the eggs every time. They just aren't good after they fall through the grate into the lump.

We use the BGE and DO in the summer when we do not want to heat up the house any more from turning on the oven. Also, if you are already cooking something in the oven, the BGE makes a great second oven with as much or more capacity than our wall ovens.

I can see doing bfast on the BGE if you are having some sort of gilled meat. After the meat is done, just throw on a skillet for your eggs and taters.

Also, the BGE is going to come in handy for us because starting Jan 3 we are doing a full kitchen remodel and won't have a stove or oven for 6 - 8 weeks. Glad I still have the gasser too since the grills are about the only way we will be able to cook.
  • Probably no more ridiculous than brownies or cookies on the egg, or any one of a number of dishes that folks do on the egg. It just shows the versatility of the Egg. Also, I think some folks find it fun to cook outdoors, sort of like cooking over a campfire.

  • You lay out bacon on a cutting board, sprinkle with turbinado sugar and cayenne, flip and repeat and put it on a raised grid over a drip pan. It comes out amazing. So do bangers.

  • All the recipes I've seen use brown sugar, actually. How does it come out with Turbinado? Does the sugar dissolve or are you still left with some crystals?

But why do I need an egg for bacon? It'll be cooked on a griddle in like 5 minutes!

Bangers as in sausages, right? As in bangers & mash? I DO do sausages (sweet Italian, brats, knockwurst, etc.) on the egg. THAT, I get! But not for breakfast!

Michael - why? because we can! While I don't do it very often it's just a fun thing to do...complete with eggs, bacon and pancakes! Does it taste better? - hmmm maybe.

Now I HAVE done brownies and cake on the egg. Not because it's any better (it's fine, but not better), but because I wanted brownies/cake and the egg was already hot from whatever I had just cooked. For breakfast, it would be stone cold. :)

  • Michael,

Bangers are English sausages. Great for breakfast! Sometimes, great food takes time, although bacon doesn't take that long but if you add the time it takes to get the egg going it is a little while. Frittatas, biscuits, sausage gravy, toast and most other breakfast dishes are enhanced by cooking over fire. Try the pig candy and let me know what you think. B)

"Because we can'? That's what I figured. Better maybe? Can't see it.

Ok. I will try pig candy. I will also try biscuits on the egg. I haven't done scratch biscuits in forever, but I will try those on the egg too. Gonna have to go some to better than the ones I do in my oven.

Why not...was my first thought. I do it fairly often. I don't think the food tastes better or different...I think I do it because I just like to cook on the egg, I like being outside, and sometimes I can do without my kitchen smelling like breakfast all day.

I make breakfast on the egg all the time.I may not gain any flavor by doing so,but I enjoy cooking outdoors.Maybe it's just me,but I find it relaxing and enjoyable  I also like to take the eggs with me on camping trips, where I have to cook all of our meals on them  It sounds to me like you don't enjoy your egg as much as some of us do.I enjoy every chance I get to cook outdoors :cheer:

Hard to beat fatties and biscuit.
  • Breakfast to me is the best meal of the day. But I grew up eating big breakfasts before going out to work before dawn even made a little bitty crack. Breakfast had to last most of the day with little more than a cold biscuit for lunch (no lunch break) and nothing else until well after dark. Wouldn't trade it for anything.

But now that I'm older, wiser and have discovered 'flavor' in food, I can truly say, breakfast is still my favorite food.

Take this for example: Simple turkey bacon, sausage and an egg cooked on a cast iron griddle on my large Egg about ten years ago.

    BaconEggSausageonGriddle.jpg

The same meal cooked on the stove was good, just not GREAT like what came off the Egg.

    or this one with pancakes.

    PancakesEggandbaconongriddle.jpg

    Way better.

    Or these biscuits:

    346593B4447Ffp633Dot3E23273D83A43D9.jpg

    Or this waffle:

    LonelyTexasWaffle.jpg

Or if you just want to play with your breakfast, how's this:

    TexasBiscuitsnHeartEggs1.jpg

Or this "Heart In The Deep Part of Texas":

You're just not a breakfast person or you would be looking for opportunities to turn your favorite meal into fun and flavor on the Egg.

Michael, I think I have isolated the problem in your own statement:

Hard to argue with that, Marc. Love the food, so I cook. The process... not so much.
