Anyone tried the Jack Daniels Old No. 7 wood chips

They are made from old whiskey barrels that have been used making Jack. I bought a bag and they smelled very nice inside the bag, just like whiskey, but then threw a handful onto the fire to see what the smoke smelled like and it was very unremarkable smelling smoke. Like that rich whiskey essence got lost in the burning and the smoke smelled very flat and one-dimensional. I can't say that I tried to cook anything with it though, and so don't know what it might taste like.

I have used the JD pellets in foil pouches and they worked ok. Just remember when you add fire to alcohol, it burns off.

They do smell good in the bag

Use them with beef and no problem, not sure how much they add. But, you have to keep them sealed good.Salado TX & 30A FL: Egg Family: 3 Large and a very well used Mini, added a Mini Max when they came out (I'm good for now). Just given a Mini to add to the herd. -
They also will spoil if opened and unused for an extended period. I have had two bags at different times (one bought, on as a gift), and if you let them lay around too long they get a putrid smell to them :( :unsure: :ermm: . Not a huge fan - dont think they made much difference than just using oak.

Like you said, they aroma changes when the chips are smoking. The flavor in the meat & chicken is excellent. If you did a burn you should at least toss on some chicken parts.
I mostly use cherry and apple wood. However, the Old #7 is excellent and I keep some on hand. I also really live grape vine. The hard woods are also very good.

I like them. While visiting Avery Island, I found out that JD uses the barrels twice and sells some of them to the McIlhenny company for tobasco. They are used ten times for tobasco and then some are sold as wood chips. That is about as good as it gets.
