AAAAAHHHHH... mother..f****.

so i just broke my thermapen. It's a year or so old. I'd left it outside once or twice and it was getting "dead spots" when you open it. where it wouldn't turn on. Called CS today they said no prob, it's normally the switch get's corroded send it in we'll fix. Sound easy huh?

Stupid me says nah, let me spray some electrical Contact Cleaner (think wd-40 but stronger)on the part that swivels to try to get the corrosion of the switch inside... Spray a little on the probe, start to swivel back and forth. Presto, plastic breaks, probe falls off. litteraly falls apart in my hand from the cleaner... thermapen ruined. All because i was to impatient to send in to CS. guess i get what i deserve. And the kicker is the cleaner states may be harmful to plastics. and i say nah, how harmful can it be? :pinch: :S :S :S

Moral of the story. Doesn't use WD-40 or any other kind of contact cleaner on your thermapen. I'd take pics but i'm too 'fn disgusted with myself. thanks for letting me rant.

I hate that for you Jimmy. I had the same exact problem and guess what...you guessed it. I sent mine in and got a phone call after they had received it and checked it out and they said they were shipping me a brand new one.

Call them or write to Amber Bowcut (amber@thermoworks.com). Tell her what you did and see what she will do for you. I know they will replace the case for $10 +shipping. Bet the functional repair is equally reasonable - maybe even warranted. Worth a shot, eh?

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

For future reference, you can peel the label off the back and take out the screws and the plastic housing will come apart.

Then use cotton swabs and rubbing alcohol to gently clean the circuit board.

This will get rid of most of the corrosion caused if you get the thermapen wet. Don't ask me how I know this, or how many times I've had to clean mine.
  • I left mine on top of my grill and melted it a few weekends ago the point that the LCD was black. I was cursing myself for destroying my faithful thermometer, with the holidays I knew I couldn't afford a new one for a while. I think I actually forgot how to cook without it!!! I called and sent mine back. They said they could fix it for $20, it arrived back on my doorstep today. GOOD AS NEW!! They have great service - you should call them

I also entered the Free Thermapen Sweepstakes on their facebook page they told me about. I hope I win!! I'll have a backup for the next time I kill my thermapen. (and my wife would love the new pink one for her kitchen. Happy Wife = Happy Life)
