New Style Fireboxes Do Crack

Back in Feb, I bought a new Large BGE that came with the new style firebox (Has a slit in it, presumably to prevent cracking when the material expands).
Well, I cleaned out my egg today in preparation to cook some steaks tonight, and lo and behold, a crack has developed in my firebox.

Here's a closeup:

Not sure how long the crack was there, as it's been a while since I cleaned out the firebox - I usually just stir up the coals and add more lump. I do all kinds of cooks, from low and slow to high heat. Oh well, I guess it was just a matter of time...

Get your dealer to order you a new one. It is under warranty.

Your dealer should be able to get you a new one just from the photo. When it comes just leave it in the box, you can still get years of service out of the cracked one! :P

My xlg fire box split open from top to bottom, less than 1 month old. I guess it doesn't like -35 wind chills at Thanksgiving in ND.

Ijust discovered tht my firebox is cracked. Does this affect the cooking temp and overall temp. My egg does not seem to hold heat as well.
Are these fireboxes under warrenty? i have had my egg for less than a year. -
you can cook with a cracked or broken firebox, just so long as you have good airflow.
mine is like a jigsaw puzzle, so I got a replacemnt for it. that was a good year or more ago. I'm still cooking on the jigsaw puzzle and have the new firebox safely stashed in the garage attic for when I really need it. -
Same here. I've had replacement fireboxes for my Large and Small in the garage for several years.
The Small is in several pieces and I'm just very careful when I clean it out, but it goes back together like a jigsaw puzzle every time. The Large has actually fused back together, from the grease, I guess. I lift it out very carefully and it stays in one piece!

Hmmmmm. I need to take a close look at my firebox. I can say that my bottom grate cracked into 3 or 4 chunks after a few weeks. This is a known problem, and the Naked Whiz has some suggestions on this:

I just left it alone, it still cooks real good.
But the fire box might be a different, more critical problem, since it may let air in when you dont want air to get in?
I think fire box crack is covered under warranty, eh? -
It can't let more air in than you let in with the vents. Even it there's NO firebox.
As for the warranty, doesn't anyone READ the warranty?! It's in the owner's manual... the green pages. THE FIREBOX IS COVERED. FOREVER. Bands are covered for 5 years (except for rust). Accessories (things you paid extra for...platesetter, pizza stone, etc.) are covered for one year.I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!
