Cooking time for two turkeys.

I'm new to this so please bare with me. I just bought a x-large green egg and will be cooking for thanksgiving. My wife wants a plain turkey and my kids like the brine turkey. I will be cooking two 12 pound birds at the same time. My question is, would my cooking time be for a 24 pound bird or a 12 pound bird.

Thanks

  • Should be the same as one bird. Separate them a little to allow for air flow between them, rotate them through the cooking process, for even browning and you're good to go. Figure about three hours at 350°, maybe a little longer if you open the dome a little more frequently.

Think of the EGG as a charcoal fired oven. Wouldn't take 24 hrs to cook in your oven, won't do it in the EGG.

    12 pound.
    Why not do one spatchcocked?
When I do spatchcocked on the large going direct at 400 and high in dome a 12 lb takes a little over an hour.
Also welcome to the forum, enjoy.
Salado TX & 30A  FL: Egg Family: 3 Large and a very well used Mini, added a Mini Max when they came out (I'm good for now). Just given a Mini to add to the herd.

  • At the 12 lb. time frame...
And...Even if one is brined and the other not, they will both cook in the same time frame.
  • What Mike said - only incrementally longer because of the extra mass of the second bird.

    Couple recommendations for new egger

Poultry will pick up the mildest smoke flavor

Make sure the lump is burning clean

To be real safe, I would light 45 minutes before putting the bird on

Sniff the exhaust to be sure there is no bad smoke
  • Think of it this way:
If you have two BGEs and put a 12 lb turkey in each one, would you cook them as if they weighed an aggregate of 24 lbs? :S
