Low Temp Set Up

Has anyone ever rotated the fire box 180 degrees in the Egg to slow air flow on low and slow cooks.
On my large the bottom vent is almost closed with a low temp cook. The normal gaps in the vent let in most of the air needed.
Just a thought.

Best guess the 180 rotation cuts off 99.44% of air flow and probable not work. why go to the trouble?

It could work
,but you'll loose the ability to use a wiggle rod(if needed) -
never tried it, i can hold 145 with it in front, never tried to go lower. how low you going, there is other waysfukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

I have trouble with low direct temps in my large.
Just thought rotating the fire box might give more temp control with the lower vent.
99.44%, A+ for guessing.Thank you,DarianGalveston Texas -

Thank you.
Not below 225 but my large still wants to creep a little higher direct.
I know I can clean out and build with min amount of lump.
Just a thought about rotating FB.Thank you,DarianGalveston Texas -
Why? Low and slow works just fine with the firebox and vents as they are now.

Just a question
Guess that is a no for you.Thank you,DarianGalveston Texas -
Several years ago there was a lot of posts about rotating the FB 180°. You could possibly find those posts by searching for 180 or 180 degrees or rotating the fire box. As I recall that time was for wind control - too much air getting into the FB.
I was going to do a test on high temperature differences with the fire box rotated but the warmer weather got away from me. When I get around to doing the tests I will also do the low temperature tests also.
Running a 225° burn only requires the bottom bent being open about 1/8" and the DFMT, slider closed and petals open about 1/8" so rotating the fire box would allow enough oxygen to get into the lump, I would guess a pretty high temperature burn at that.
My large will burn at 225° - 250° just fine with the FB in normal position and the vents closed as stated above. The egg is very stable and the lump will burn for a long time without tending as long as I light in 2 or 3 places. Lighting in 1 place will usually result in a vertical burn.
Going lower than 200°, I use a 'lump reducer', that is a SS bowl with holes in the bottom for air flow. That works for smoking cheese and jerky. Also, a few briquettes with flavor wood on top will work good for cheese smoking.
For me rotating the fire box, or doing anything with the fire box, is just a pain in the butt.
In the same breath I don't think the fire box has to "perfectly" aligned with the lower vent opening either to achieve a high temperature burn.
My 2¢ worth on the matter.
