Morning All:

In getting ready to do a couple of pork butts later today I figured I hadn't done a TOTAL clean of my Large Eggs since October (when I took them to Tallahassee for my son's wedding), so sounded like a good idea. Now I'm not so sure...I almost wish I didn't find what I did...a crack in the bottom of the 2005 Large...

It does go from one side to the other, left side...
EB051510-02.jpg

and right side...
EB051510-03.jpg

It does appear to go all the way through as I could see it on the outside on the right, but can't get my head behind to see the left, but can feel the crack. This pic isn't good, but at the bottom just to the right of center you can make out the crack...

Guess I need to contact one of my local dealers to which one will work with me on getting a new base unit. At least I still have the other Large for tonight's cook :)

Have a GREAT day!

So that's what they mean by "Broke In."

Sorry to hear that Jay. Now you have to get used to a new base.

Sorry to see that Jay. At least you can get that fixed with ease.
Another reason to have more than one egg! ;)

sorry to hear that, Jay...gotta wonder out loud why that happened - I mean you're down there where it stays warm year around so I'd think thermo-shock is out of the question. As cracks go that is in a fairly straight line. Your post ought to become a "sticky note" to be used when people poo-poo the value of the life time warranty when they argue buying used eggs! Paying out of pocket for just one base would make you a believer!

You got that right...I try to warn, but it's their money...not typically worth buying used in my opinion..

Do you think it could've cracked when you were moving them back and forth?

    HUH?

    Morning Wess:

I knew someone would make that remake! Yes, I know what to do...just need to figure out which local dealer will work with me the best, since all of my current Eggs were bought at EggFests, not from a local dealer.

    Have a GREAT day!

I'd rather not have to mess with doing a new base :) , but it is what it is.

Yeah, another good reason for more than one Egg! However, I'd rather not have to use this reason :(

Yeah, it should be easy to fix, but I'd rather not have to!

Still can use the other Eggs though!

    Morning Ron:

I'm wondering how it happened too! I KNOW when it was put back into place after coming back from Tallahassee in October that there wasn't any crack so it had to happen sometime since then. While it was a cold winter for Florida, it wasn't THAT cold. But yes, it is nice to have the lifetime warranty!

    Have a GREAT day!

    Morning thegrillster:

If it did happen when moved last October, it wasn't obvious as I checked both Large Eggs VERY carefully when I put them back into place in the ODK. There wasn't anything that even resembled a crack at that time. The cast iron fire grate in the other Large was broken (found that when I cleaned to put in the car for the trip TO Tallahassee), but this Egg looked fine both ends of the trip.

    Oh well, love the warranty!

    Have a GREAT day!

Sorry to hear your egg cracked, Jay. I hope you find a local dealer to help you get your replacement parts.

We just ordered a potlifter to help us move ours easily. Hopefully, we don't find a crack when we're finished moving ours! We're taking it on the road next weekend for a BBQ/Swap meet and we'll be doing the cooking for the entire event (wish us luck!). Should be a busy, but fun, day!

    Good luck!

    Morning Julie:

I don't believe mine came from moving it. I KNOW there wasn't a crack in it when we got back from Tallahassee, so I'm not sure what caused it.

Where is the BBQ/Swap meet next weekend and do you want some help (if it isn't tooooo far away)?

    Have a GREAT day!

  • SSN686, My 2005 large developed a crack like yours about a year and a half ago.

The crack like yours went from front to back and about a 1/3 of the way up the back side. I called the mothership and I spoke to (Brian?). He had me send pictures to him and he determined that it was covered under warranty. I went to my dealer and had the new based shipped to them so I did not have to pay the freight. Good luck.

    Morning RR:

Does look similar...mine doesn't go through the bottom vent area...about 4 to 5 inches to the right of the vent for one side. Glad to hear it all worked out for you. I may start with one of the local dealers and then contact the mothership if necessary.

    Have a GREAT day!
