Help!- Can't get below 280-300

OK, a newbie here and trying out the egg. Practice run only before do a brisket. Lit 3 places with MAPP gas, but even with vent closed, daisy wheel slide clsoed and daisy wheel vents closed (eveything closed) cannot get it to go below 280-300. Recalibrated thermometer also. Is this because no brisket in there to absorb heat? Man, this thing is really sensitive. How do you cool it dow?

  • I see the problem now, the assembly job BBQ galore did is bad. There is a quarter inch gap in the back between lid and bottom. Does anyone know how to adjust those spring do-hickeys?[p]Joe
  • Joe,
Loosen the top ring, almost all the way off, until you can push down the lid.... then tighten the ring back up. [p]To test for a good seal... take a credit card (or something similar without the sensitive magnetic stripe ;-) and push it in and out between the closed lid seal. It should have a slight tension to either put in or take out....[p]When the seal is tight all around... you should be able to feel the same amount of tension anywhere around the lid.[p]I had a similar problem with the lid and it took a few times of loosening and then tightening to get that bugger on right....[p]

    Nardi,
"It should have a slight tension to either put in or take out....[p]When the seal is tight all around... you should be able to feel the same amount of tension anywhere around the lid."[p] I think this was the same advise my dad gave me the night before my wedding... :0) Mac[p]

    joe,
also, when trying to go low (and slo), just light it in one spot, in the middle.[p]that'll keep it from getting high early heat and getting away from you
