Best lump I've ever used-> Fire King in St. Louis
I saw the write up on Naked Whiz about this charcoal, but never could find it (at least at a decent price.) It has large chunks and you can go though a whole bag without cleaning out the Egg. Lots of sparks when you light it for the first time, but it gets up to temp fast.
I found a guy on craigslist selling it. He's a BGE guy x2 that drives out to the plant and buys a few thousand pounds of this Fire King to get a deal. Splits it up with family & friends then lists the rest on CL. $11 a bag with delivery, but he only charged me $10 when I bought 5 bags (and when I said I would write this shameless plug--haha--Apparently, his wife wants her parking space back in the garage.)

Better then Ozark Oak? Got some in Mexico, MO a week ago while I was up there for 6 bucks for 10lb bag. Closest city that sells OO to me would be Sullivan, MO which is still 70 miles out. I might have to try this Fire King stuff since this guy is closer to me.
-
I've never tried Ozark Oak....where in Sullivan? I'll go get some and give it a try.
I stocked up on this Fire King since it was cheap and plentiful. If the OO is better, maybe I'll stock up on that too and keep the Fire King as backup. Maybe this guy can get Ozark Oak as well. He was talking about ordering a pallet of that expensive coconut shell based stuff from those weird Kamado guys. -
I called the OO headquarters and they gave me a number to the distibutor in MO. The guy told me they sell it at 2 places in Sullivan. One place called Schmidts and another called Moody's. They are both meat markets but have not been there. They also sell in Cuba, Rolla, St. James and thier HQ in Springfield.

dang a couple meat markets that sell Ozart Oak lump.....that would be tall cotton for me....www.ceramicgrillstore.com ACGP, Inc.

Well since its Friday and I'm not doing a whole lot here at work I called both places. Moody's carries it for 6.99 a bag but they are out at the moment. Sounds like the lady there can order as much as she wants though so call ahead .. maybe pre-purchase??? The other one does meat processing and doesnt carry it. Maybe the distributor meant another place?
Seems like Fire King option is cheaper. If u get some OO compare the 2 and see if there is a big diff. My last option is always RO. Walmart always carries it for under 7 bucks. -
Thanks for the info. I'll call Moody's and make a trip down there some time this summer.
I've seen RO at WalMart more and more, but that stuff is junk IMHO. I stockpiled some FireKing since my new friend only makes the trip once or twice a year to pick it up.
If you want some of the discounted Fire King before it's all gone, send him an email: stlcharcoal@gmail.com

That grocery store in Mexico is where I have purchased OO several times as well. Trouble is it's over a 500 mile round trip for me! OTOH old Dave drives there to Mexico clear from IN. BTW where are you located and how did you hear about OO being available in Mexico?Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time

You can get Fire King at the Farmer's Co-Op in old town St Peters. I haven't bought it there this year but it was $9-10 for a 20lb bag last year.
-
Never seen it there, but he said the plant raised the price late last summer by 20% because of their gas costs. They never lowered it when gas went back down though. Probably not that cheap anymore if you haven't seen it this year. :(

OO at the IGA in mexico. Got the tip off here of course! I was out camping at Mark Twain and decided to venture there since it was close. I hit the jackpot with 5 bags plus a large jar of Blues Hog baby! They sell it everywhere down there.
Fire King in St.Peters is damn near close to me, I'm out in O,fallon. Might have to check it out .. Thanks for the tip! -
Jonathan already responded to me .. man he's fast. I'm going to hook up with him in the next
few weeks and grab some bags. Fire up the King baby! -
I was just talking to the co-op because I was out of Fire King and I use it for certain cooks. They sell it for $9.75 for a 20lb bag. I'm just relaying what they told me.
-
Man, spoke to Jonathan and he already hooked me up during lunch! He dropped it by since he was already making another run. Got 5 bags for 50 bucks. No tax so it actually comes out cheaper. Nice to know good charcoal is available around here.
Does anyone know where I can get some good smoking woods like apple or cherry in STL? Walmart sells chips but looking to buy maybe some logs I can cut up into chunks. -
Smoke N Fire out off of Manchester in Ballwin sells split 12" inch pcs of cherry, apple, hickory etc. They also sell bags of chunks.
-
I've been using fire king for a while now. I get it at a small grocery store/ meat market in casseyville il for $10.
-
Springfield?? Heck, my daughter goes to school there. I'm all over that!
