I was at our local Sam's today and got to looking at the briskets (and everything else in the meat case) I noticed the normal choice briskets. I also noticed choice angus briskets. This is the first time I've found these at Sam's. I am sure it is not CAB, but the cryovac from the packer is an aggus stamped bag.

Does anyone have experience with these. I like CAB choice briskets but these were a pretty good price at $1.78/lb.

  • Don't know why you think they are not CAB? I've checked with a few people and they seem to think it is legite. I usually buy the 7-8lb flats for $2.79lb and have been very happy.

  • Usually CAB marked on the package. It is a program that angus breeders can belong to. These just said "angus" on the cryovac and did not contain the CAB logo.

Briskets or other meats that carry a special name (in addition to the normal grading classifications) are called "branded meats". Branded is a snappy name and so are the names like CAB, Meyer Angus, or Ranchers Reserve. Usually the packers or organizations that oversee packing houses that are members, do have some requirements or procedures they feel are important enough that consumers will have a preference for their branded products.

In a side-by-side test, it may be hard to tell the difference between branded and non-branded beef of the same grade.
