We are going to build a table for our egg. We are thinking about cedar--are there any disadvantages to using cedar that anyone can share? I know the BGE table is made out of cypress but it is difficult to find. Thanks

I made my table out of Cedar with a pine frame. After the fact I wish I had used Oak for the frame. I am happy with the Cedar part though. I would see no problem, other than expense, using Cedar for the whole thing although it might be a little soft for the top.[p]Good luck with your project.

duckegg,
I was thinking about building a table for my large BGE and was impressed with your table. I do have one question and it may sound silly, but how did you cut the hole for it to be perfect? I'm pretty handy when it comes to wood working, but cutting a hole that large seems to be a challenge. [p]Thank you for your knowledge

Kim,
Built an Aderondak* style chair out of cedar. Looks good but the screws have to be tightened every year at least. Wood is a bit too soft, I would use something harder for the frame.

Tim The Tool Man,
You say you're pretty handy working with wood...do you have a saber saw? Also it can be cut and/or trimmed up nicely with a router mounted on a trammel.

I had this neat old drefting set that worked very well to pencil in the outline. I think ol' Naked Whizz has a method on his great site for those who don't have a big enough compass on hand.

Kim,
Cedar is very stable in shape and also naturally resistant to bigs and rot.[p]As the others said, the wood itself isn't very hard. It can be gouged and dented more easily than pine and much more easily than hardwoods like Oak.[p]The route I took with my table was to make the frame out of Cedar, but make the tabletop surfaces out an extremely hard decking wood called Ipe.[p]Because the Cedar is softer, I made some slots in the legs that the side pieces fit into. (Called dadoes) This is stronger than just screwing the sides to the legs.[p]Cedar lasts even longer if you paint it, so I used some exterior house paint to paint the frame. It will be a lot less work to maintain than a varnish or stain.[p]The tabletop pieces are made of stained Ipe. It's a very hard wood. Maintaining the stain finish will be more work than paint, but the grain and color are beautiful and it would have been a shame to cover.[p]I made a little scrap-wood sled jig for my jigsaw that let me swing the saw around in a circle.[p]
