Don't Clean your Platesetter in Your Oven

<p />My platesetter has been accumulating grease and gettting generally disgusting. It needed cleaning badly so I put it in the oven and ran it through the clean cycle. DO NOT REPEAT THIS AT HOME![p]The smmoke filled the house, set off the smoke alarm and scared the dogs. I had to open the window, put my shop vac on the deck and suck the smoke out of the oven top vent. Needless to say my wife was not thrilled with the situation.[p]Then I remembered someone on the forum who said they cleaned their egg and platesetter by putting some tinfoil in the egg and letting it clean itself. I tried that. After an indirect cook of some eggs in cupcake tins, biscuits and sausage on the plate setter, I laid some tin foil down and held the temperature at 500 degreees for about three hours. I can't believe how clean the platesetter came out.[p]This was way too easy. I posted pictures.[p]Treehouse

Treehouse,[p]I clean my egg and plate setter by just letting the egg run at 600-700 for about 20 minutes.[p]When it all cools I brush it with a brass brush or a crumpled ball of foil. Then I take the shop vac to it all.[p]

Be very careful! I fried my gasket doing the exact same thing!

EdeMitch,[p]I haven't had much of a gasket on my large in a couple years. But you're right, they will melt if you get it too hot doing this. [p]

  • Fidel,[p]i was concerned about melting the gasket too. That's why I kept the temps to 500-550 with the foil. It worked great and I don't think it affected the gasket. my large is about 2.5 yrs old.[p]Gary

    Treehouse,
Many years ago after I had my first blackened steak in a resturant and while living in a 12 unit apartment it was, or seemed like, a good idea to save some money and really impress someone, make blackened steak at home.[p] Hot girl coming over for dinner and whatever.[p] No problem found a recipe- high heat-heavy cast iron skillet-butter-Paul Proudhomme blackening powder-steak- piece of cake. Nothin to it. [p]Man, I'm really gonna really impress this girl.

Did you know apartment buildings have smoke detectors that call the fire department? I didn't.[p]The firemen were nice guys though, never saw that girl again. [p]Probably a good thing considering that I still generate a large amount of smoke when I cook.

  • Treehouse,I have recently purchased a plate setter for my Egg and I need to know some foods to cook on it. You mentioned eggs in a muffin tin and biscuits and sausage. Sounds yummy. I have only had my large egg for 5 months and have had fun using it, since I do not like to cook inside. My other 2 grills are shoved aside collecting dust. Thank you for your help and I enjoy all the comments posted on this forum. They have been a big help since this is my first Egg. Have a great day.
