Traditionally, it was believed that eating certain foods on New Year's Day would bring good luck and prosperity throughout the coming year. Peas, greens, and cabbage were especially popular, as they symbolized money, while legumes like black-eyed peas were thought to bring wealth. In the South, pork is often served because it represents progress and forward motion. Even now, many families have their own special menus that they follow every year.

If you're looking for something traditional, consider making Honey and Spice Sautéed Pork Tacos or Hoppin' John - it's pork, black-eyed peas over rice. For something more unique, try Cedar Planked Smoked Salmon or Grilled Oysters with Garlic Herb Butter. Growing up was always Black eye peas, with what meat we had, and cornbread. Grandma’s were Southern cooks.
My wife is from Pa, so it’s been Sourkraut and pork over mashed taters for the past 35 years. -
It is my birthday, but my favorite New Years Eve tradition is reading the pinned "Eggtoberfest thread" aloud to the neighborhood children just before midnight.
It is a super sweet time of reflection for all. Their eyes are always wide with wonder! Sometimes, they shout, "read it again!"
