Rain proofing your BGE

edited March 2019 in EggHead Forum
I wanted to repost one the the greatest “Hack” I have learned from the BGE Forums. A 6 inch vent stack cover slides tightly over the cast iron vent and work AMAZING! No idea who put this idea together but you are a Patron Saint of the BGE! They are available at all the box stores and hardware stores.

I like it but you should get prepared for the Smokeware Cap crowd bombardment in 3,2,1...

There are many shapes of those vent covers available at all the big box stores for less than $12. Most are either aluminum or galvanized steel. The key to using them is to be careful as they get extremely hot in a very short time. Just make sure you don't grab it or you will have serious burns.

@stlcharcoal - How many bags of RW do I have to buy to get one of those rain covers thrown in?

    That's a limited edition, pal.

Tell ya what, if you can eat the whole can of green beans that comes in there in one sitting, then I'll cut the hole and autograph it as "2 of 2."
  • I love the green beans.... If only I could get my wife to eat them!

Welcome aboard.  Curious what forums you've been getting this advice from?

I've got smokeware caps, but I do appreciate the "redneckiness" of your solution.

That goes back to the old days of the original BGE forum (now greeneggers.com).

Lags bolts for grill raisers.......then somebody sold some clips that slid in behind the fire ring to elevate the grid.

Using wire to hold pie pans under the grid back before the plate setter ever came out.

What else was there?  We had all kinds of hacks back when you got the Egg, single function daisy wheel, and an ash tool that doubled as a hinge lock (before the spring band.)

  • Yup, came from right here 3-4 years ago. Had a big cook working and a storm blew up. Took the advice and it fits snug as a bug. Made me think someone else could use the idea as Spring just about sprung and pesky storms will blow up again..... They did again here in N. Texas this evening.

You could always do like Leroy did before the coop...

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!

Sure do and if PhotoBucket wasn't puking its guts out tonight I would have (or may still) post a picture. The egger went by Mickey T. He owned a wood working company that made wooden parts for high end tool companies. His rings were laser cut using scraps of "plywood" which wasn't the commonplace plywood, but like 16 ply per inch. Maybe when Photo Bucket shapes up I can post a picture.

    Whoops - they just did!
