I do the Mapp torch (aka yellow bottle).   I've heard that the propane bottles (blue) don't work when upside down.  Considering I have to invert the bottle to light the charcoal, that would be a show stopper. They are significantly cheaper than the Mapp.   Is the upside down thing true?
The upside down problem occurs when NOT using a pressure regulated torch head.

Torch heads like the Bernzy TS4000/TS8000 work fine with any bottle upside down.

Also, they quit making real MAP gas years ago. The yellow bottles these days are called MAP/Pro and are not the same thing as back in the day. They do not burn much hotter than the plain, cheap propane bottles.

For years I've just held the bottle upside down but this Spring I got one of these torch head extension hoses:

I have an old jam jar stuffed with paper towels rolled and tied in a knot.  Pour in some oil and you're away.  Just do about 20 to refil when the jar runs out. I don't really like the BGE starters, still have the original pack that came with the XL. I have a weed burner with a small gas cartridge, but that runs out fast.  The paper towels are effective enough that I am not currently tempted to buy a big weed burner and have a proper gas cylinder.

I have a weed torch, looft lighter, electric iron, and the old “ golf club” from guru. I use the lighter cubess prolly 80-90% of the time. It’s quick and reliable and hands free. I light then walk away and do my thing returning to a properly lit fire. I do love the golf club for high heat fires as it is also hands free, but you can’t buy them any longer. The other methods all work as well, but are my least favorite. Many ways to get there.

Can’t buy golf clubs any longer? What happens to all those fairways and greens?

Aw man, that tool is an all time great. Someone must have had an accident and sued. Too bad, it was a great one. I love mine. They called it that cus it was a stainless tube like a golf club shaft and had a bend at the end resembling an iron.

it will work at first but as it gets lower it wont work as well.  I mentioned the jjgeorge torch before that fixes the issue.  if you don't want to pay shipping I would more than happily pick you one up locally and bring it to north Georgia with me or we are going to an egg fest in march in Jacksonville.

I use a weed torch from Harbor Freight.  Best thing ever for me.

The JJ George little lighter I saw on Instagram looks neat to me.  If something happened to my weed torch, I'd look into them for space savings.

  • I had a cheap torch head that did not work for sh*t.  It wouldn't stay lit and took a long time to start the fire. I bought this one and it works upside down. I only use propane and it burns hot as hell.

I've used both, but pretty much only paper towel and veg oil the past few years. Other than maybe cost, curious why you wouldn't use the BGE starters? They seem to work similarly and no messing with oil.

  • I generally use Rutland fire starter squares. Last year I bought 2 boxes at the local HomeDepot (link) for $9 each before they jacked up the price. I take 1/3 of the box cut the squares along the perforated lines then store in a plastic grocery bag along with my lump charcoal. Then use 2-3 square to start the fire. Most of the time I'm satisfied with the length of time to ignite starters and ready to cook.

If the price of these starter squares continues to go up, I'll probably give the JJ George starter a try.

It must have been ease of lighting the starter, but I can't really remember. Just never felt the need to go back.
