Mad Max's prime rib

Has anyone tried Mad Max's Prime Rib recipe on the Naked Whiz website? http://www.nakedwhiz.com/madmaxprimerib.htm
I'm planning on doing this tomorrow but was just wondering if the part about closing down the vents means completely closing them to get to 325 or setting the vents where 325 would normally be?

No idea with the cook but you are going to hose up the cook if you close the vents completely down-think of the smell when you snuff a candle-don't go there. Kill the air to a fire in the BGE will result in a foul smell and taste end-product. FWIW-Louisville; Rolling smoke in the neighbourhood. Life is too short for light/lite beer! Seems I'm livin in a transitional period. CHEETO (aka Agent Orange) makes Nixon look like a saint.

Yeah exactly what I was concerned with.

Set vents to 325[social media disclaimer: irony and sarcasm may be used in some or all of user's posts; emoticon usage is intended to indicate moderately jocular social interaction; the comments toward users, their usernames, and the real people (living or dead) that they refer to are not intended to be adversarial in nature; those replying to this user are entering into a tacit agreement that they are real-life or social-media acquaintances and/or have agreed to or tacitly agreed to perpetrate occasional good-natured ribbing between and among themselves and others]

I did it once and it worked out just fine - no nasty smoke, no foul taste, and no snuffing out the fire. The trick is getting a very clean burn before you clamp it down.
I prefer a low and slow / reverse sear now, but the Mad Max worked for me when I did it.Living the good life smoking and joking -
I was wondering how a prime rib does with reverse sear. I know alotta people who do the ole 500 in the oven and then shut the oven off and let the rib sit until it reaches temp. Probably why that's a recommended way.SmokingPiney said:I did it once and it worked out just fine - no nasty smoke, no foul taste, and no snuffing out the fire. I'm sold on the reverse sear. I cook it at 250 indirect to an IT of about 125, pull to get the coals to 500, and sear it about a minute a side. It's medium rare end to end.Powak said:

I agree with @smokingpiney, reverse sear on a rib roast is rocking! I brought my last one to 120-ish internal at about 225 with oak smoke, took it off, let the LBGE go nuclear to almost 700, removed the plate setter and then rotated the roast around end to end, top to bottom, ribs up, ribs down for a couple minutes each (SWMBO does not like hers as rare) and it turned out awesome, kinda medium-well on the ends and more medium rare in the center.LBGE

I get a better crust simply going 225-250 all the way thru
even better when you dry it (longer the better). Min 24-48 hrs. Up to maybe 45-60 days[social media disclaimer: irony and sarcasm may be used in some or all of user's posts; emoticon usage is intended to indicate moderately jocular social interaction; the comments toward users, their usernames, and the real people (living or dead) that they refer to are not intended to be adversarial in nature; those replying to this user are entering into a tacit agreement that they are real-life or social-media acquaintances and/or have agreed to or tacitly agreed to perpetrate occasional good-natured ribbing between and among themselves and others] -
Wound up going with the reverse sear. Came out spectacular!
