Sunday Dinner is this week's 2nd Grade Lunch

My daughter has officially sworn off school lunches.  She used to get them occasionally, if there was something she liked (breakfast for lunch was always a favorite) or if my wife just didnt have time to get one together and get them out the door in time.  Now, all school lunches are icky and she's old enough to do it herself.  This week is going to be tri tip lettuce wraps.  Seasoned a 2.75 lb tri tip with Santa Maria seasoning and got it on the egg at 275.
Let that roast until an IT of 115, and then pulled and got some onions, prepped with olive oil, herb salt, and pepper, on a raised direct.
As the onions softened up, I dropped them to the lower level to get a touch more color, and added the tri tip to finish up.  I pulled it at 130, flipping a few times when it was going direct.  I sliced the tri tip and we served with a horseradish cream sauce, mayacoba beans, and the grilled onions.  The onions and beans will go with the salad my wife and I have most weeks for lunch, and as noted the tri tip is going with my daughter, along with Bibb lettuce, broccoli slaw, string cheese, and chopped pineapple or grapes.

  • You guys all exhibit amazing portion control. I would have to take down much more than those few pieces.

Thanks.  Not pictured are the 2-3 slices everyone grabbed while I was doing the slicing and playing.  Also, we knew we needed to make sure that something would be leftover.

That's terrific!  Getting a nourishing tasty egged meal. She's a smart young lady. Yep I see a future egging girl here. ;)
Birthday Mini or MM in her future. Something tells me this one would spat upon an Easy Bake or Barbie oven.

Thanks she is definitely interested in the grills, and will want to learn how to use them when she's a bit older.  She loves being in the kitchen, and made (with some supervision and a bit of help) a chicken & pasta soup for her lunch earlier this winter.  We did just get her a knife and peeler for herself:  http://www.opinel-usa.com/collections/opinel-kids-corner/products/opinel-le-petit-chef-set#.VOuNcIY8KnM

I'd heartily recommend that set to any other parent who has kids in the 6+ age range.

I know what you mean!  Both my parents can cook really well, but my lunches tended to the turkey & cheese on wheat bread.

I always got lucky since my dad would repurpose grilled stuff into sandwiches but pizza Friday was always a favorite.
