Anyone see America's Test Kitchen this week?

Not sure if anyone watches America's Test Kitchen on PBS (or for that matter if all PBS's show the same episodes each week either), but this week on the MN PBS they had one where they compared charcoal "smokers". They compared the BGE, some Brinkman piece of junk, and the Weber Smokey Mountain.

In the end they liked the Weber, mostly because it was not as expensive or heavy as the BGE. I just thought it was funny that they didn't mention the fact that the BGE is not a smoker, it is also an oven, grill, etc. The Weber Smokey Mountain is just a smoker, no more no less. I have a Smokey Mountain, and they aren't bad, but after getting an egg I am selling it because I like the versatility.

BTW there was also a pretty good looking recipe for a grilled sirloin roast on this particular episode.

I watched it, but they didn't review smokers, so it must've been a different episode.

What surprises me though, is, the "Smoky Mountain" can't be used as a grill? I thought it could and was seriously considering it before getting my Egg...

Well, WSM's show up next to some pretty impressive cookers, for good reason. You might consider keeping yours for extra cookin' space when smoking ribs, butts and briskets. Or for loaning out to your buddies....

I think some folks mod the smokey mountain to use as a grill, but it really isn't meant to be a grill. It is a pretty good smoker, I used it for several years with good success. It really taught me a lot about smoking and temperature control, BUT it just ate fuel here in Minnesota during the winter and it was a one hit wonder, all it did was smoke stuff.

Guess my question about different PBS's playing different episodes has been answered :)

Even though the WSM is pretty small I just don't have room for all these grills... Maybe I'll hand it off to a family member...

Exactly. Temps got erratic and ate a lot of fuel during Wisconsin blizzards, etc. I used the WSM for 8 years before I purchased the XL egg last summer. I used the WSM for grilling and smoking (but more so for smoking).
