I saw eenie meenie's post about the last maters of the year so I thought I would post this.I had a pretty good crop this past growing season and my mater vines were LOADED with green tomatoes when the first big frost was predicted. So we pulled the cream of the crop green.I placed them in cardboard boxes lined with newspaper then covered them with more newspaper and placed them in a spot that stays cool and dark. You need to check them about twice a week to remove ripe ones and to check the others. Some will turn bad and need removing and paper replaced. It is a little PITA but well worth it.If things go as planned I will serve ripe tomatoes outta my garden for Christmas Dinner. They were ALL as green as the one in the pic when I boxed em up.The sad thing is there were enough green ones left in the garden when the frost came to fill the bed of a Full sized pickup truck! :(
To stay on topic...I cooked today too.Buckboard bacon and.....GUESS!
NO! NO! NO! WRONG!!! It is a boneless ham...HONEST!!! I'll show sliced pics later,I SWEAR!

Great post Hoss! I never seen anyone put green tomatoes up like you. I seen them go to waste is all. I will do that for my tomato's next year.
Can't wait to see how the rest of your post turns out. Tim -

Well, you had me goin' there with your pseudobaloney! -

Great idea! can't you sell all those to restaraunts that fry green tomatoes? BTW, I recieved my La Hossa! Thanks brother! Now is this about as hot as la bomba or should I be fearful because the lid is smoldering? I haven't opened it yet. Please tell me more about it.
-
Brother,
It's just a tiny little bit hotter than the bomb. Good stuff!

Thanks Todd! The Hossa is warm/Hot depending on your individual heat tolerence. It is pure ground peppers, many varieties, all hot, garlic, onions salt and vinegar cooked down then jarred and waterbath canned.I gave it all away if that tells you anything!!! Just funnin.Just try a little sample first then go from there.

Todd, I got some and put a 1/2 tea spoon on a cracker and ate it. At first it was some what mild with a hint of sweet then, as the minutes passed to hours and after a good crying jag I felt better the next day. :woohoo:
It's pretty good and I personally think it's the best I have ever tasted. :P Tim
Thank you Hoss -
Tim,
I had a heaping tablespoon right out of the jar. I didn't cry, well I sniffled a bit, but I think it was allergies. I'm out. #2 and 3 sons took a liking to it.
In any case you're a girly man.

Thanks! Sorry your maters played out. :( It was a tough year for a garden!
-
Hoss,
Sometimes I wonder how many people you feed. You always post SO MUCH food! :woohoo:
Nice looking maters. Hard to imagine fresh maters for Christmas!
Can't wait to see final picks of the ham and bacon.
Richard -
Ha Steven, You must be a real man like Chuck Norris. My hat is off to you. To tell the truth I didn't cry either but after a while my tongue got hot and stayed that way for an hour. Later that night I had to get up from a restful night sleep and go have a nice long talk with the toidy bowl man not once not twice but three times! :woohoo: Needless to say I'm ready for round two!
-
The Buckboard is @ 129 rite now.Won't be long!Thanks!
-
Dang it Hoss - your garden just doesn't stop!!! Fresh maters from your own garden at Christmas can't be beat.
Tomorrow is a big day for your family if I remember correctly. Looking forward to pictures. -
Thanks E! Little Callen should land at 2:30 tomorrow afternoon.
