another way is to use fire bricks on a lower grid and another grid on top of the bricks.

I did the same thing Adam (Ripnem) did.

The cheapest and easiest way is to use less lump in the firebox. You achieve the same thing, which is to create distance between the lump and the food.

Of course, there are some aftermarket products that are very nice to have (such as the adjustable rig or the BGE extended grid), but in a pinch use less lump.

I just got a second fire ring. Raises the grid flush with the bottom half of the egg, makes getting burgers off with a spatula much easier and helps prevent burning and over cooking. Good Luck
