I cleaned my lge. BGE and filled it to the top of the firebox with Royal Oak (usa) lump. I hooked up my Guru and lit the fire. I put the Guru in ramp mode with a grate temp of 225 and a meat temp of 195. I put on a 12 lb. brisket at 6:00 PM. The last time I checked it was 10:00 PM and everything seemed O.K. AT 6:00 AM the next morning I checked it and the Guru fan was running constantly. The grate temp was 110 and the meat temp was 171 and was cooked perfectly. I pulled the meat off wrapped it in foil and put it in a cooler filled with crumpled newspaper. In trying to determine what had happened I discoverd that all of my lump was burned up.
I have done several long cooks, up to 16 hours and have never ran out of lump. Does anyone have any ideas as to what might have caused this? Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks,
texasfiddlefan

Lump is fairly inconsistent. The density of the original wood, as well as what kind of wood it was can make a big difference in how long it burns, and how hot. Usually, it averages out. Every now and then, it doesn't, and the load is light and quick burning. So, its a good idea to fill to half way up the fire ring for long cooks.
But, at least the meat turned out fine.
If you haven't visited the Naked Whiz's lump database web site, do so. He lists average burn times for different brands. -
Thanks, next time I will put in more lump.

texasfiddlefan, I am wondering how you set the daisy wheel and the damper on the pit viper.
My settings are usually like this.

dont know what your setup was, if the barrier for inderect is too large, the fire beneath it is bigger and burns more lump. i know when cooking the bigger cooks with my 15.5 inch stone as a barrier, it takes a huge fire to maintan 225 in the dome area.fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

My daisy wheel was about the same as yours and the damper was half closed.

I was using the plate setter legs up.

my friend overloads his and fire goes out alot..

If your lump was completely burned, top to bottom and side to side, you didn't load enough lump in the egg.
How high did you load the egg and were the pieces larger than usual for your overnight cooking?
Powered vent systems can and do have vertical burns where the fire doesn't migrate sideways.
Having the Guru, it is a comfort to use a remote dual probe thermometer with alarms like the Maverick ET-73.
Glad to hear your cook completed before the fire gave out.

Is the fire going out without running out of lump, or is the lump burned up.
-
Yes the lump was completely burned up, top to bottom and side to side. I just poured the lump in but I did notice some larger than normal pieces.
Thanks for the reply.

When I do an overnighter, I load it up almost to the top of the fire ring (not the fire box). How full did you have yours? The Naked Whiz

I only filled it to the top of the fire box, that was probably the problem.
Thanks,
