'tis the beginning of a new year. I've now been through a full calendar year as a member, and I think it's pretty apparent that there are definitely topic trends throughout the year. Let's predict 2010, shall we? Please note that this was typed in loving-jest font, not in snide-sarcasm font.
Early January:
New members posting "I just got an egg for Christmas" "Help! How do I work this thing?" "Any good recipes?" "What's an ABT?" and "What accessories do I need?"
Older members posting "Look how cold it is, and I'm cooking outside!"
Later in January: "Help I'm going to cook my first low n' slow for the Super Bowl and I need help."
Early Febuary: "Help, the Super Bowl is tomorrow and I need pulled pork/brisket tips!" and then a mass of Super Bowl party pics.
Mid Feb: Valentines Day dinner pics.
Late Feb: A late freeze induces another mass of cold-weather egging posts.
March: corned beef and March Madness cooks. Lots of smoked cheese and jerky.
April: "Help, I'm going to make (insert roasted beast dish here) for Easter and I need guidance" followed immediately by "Here's what we had at Easter."
May: "Anyone else getting excited for Eggtoberfest?" and the last few smoked cheeeses and beef jerky posts of the spring. Eggfest season begins in earnest. Lots of "I just got my first egg at such-and-such-eggfest, what do I need to know?" from now through October.(I was one of these folks in Sept '08).
June: lots of Eggfest photos from around the country, "It was awesome to meet so-and-so at such-and-such-eggfest." And "Eggtoberfest is only four months away, who is going?"
July: Independence Day cooks, and "gosh it's hot" comments.
August: Southern eggers start asking the Canadian Eggers to send cool air south. A lull in Eggfest activity.
September: Renewed eggfest activity, and the daily Eggtoberfest registration countdown, followed by "Who was first to register?" and "I just registered!" threads. Lots of football party posts (wings, ribs, chili, ABTs)
October: Fests begin to dwindle. Cheese, jerkey and chilis/stews pick up steam, as does baking. Eggtoberfest mania: "Help, I need tickets." "Do they accept walk-ups?" "What do I need to know about cooking at Eggtoberfest?" "Who all is going?" "What are you cooking?" "Man, I wish I could go." (this has been me for the last two years) "I'm packing to go." "I'm on the road/in the plane." "We're here!" "Here's me in the BGE warehouse with all the eggs." "Man, what a party!" "Here's a picture of so-and-so at the fest." "So-and-so cooked an awesome such-and-such." "Man, what an afterparty!" "We're home! It was fun meeting everyone. Can't wait until next year." and "Maybe next year I'll be able to make it."
November: "Ping: Mad Max" and "Who is this Mad Max and what makes him the turkey expert?". Naked Whiz starts the Mad Max countdown. "Help! Thanksgiving is tomorrow, any good turkey recipes?" followed by innumerable photos of cooked turkeys and praise of Mad Max. Dry-aging of meat discussions reach their peak, in preparation for Christmas.
December: "My husband/wife is an egger, what are good accessory gift ideas?" "I just found out my wife/husband is getting me such-and-such for Christmas!" "Thanks so-and-so for the unexpected gift of such-and-such, you're awesome." "Getting ready for Christmas dinner, how do I make such-and-such?" "Merry Christmas to all!" "Here's to a great 2011."
Looks like another fun year on the forum to me! Can't wait! Here's to new members, new recipes and lots of good times.

On that same note, it seems every year brings a hot new topic. In late '08 (or was it early '09) La Bomba was huge. This past spring it was pork loin roulades. Lately sriracha/marmalade wings have been big.
Any predictions on what will be big and new in 2010? -
-
Guess you weren't here for "The" chicken.-RP
-
Nope, "The chicken" was before my time. I have made "the chicken" though. It was quite good. I've also made "the shrimp". I still need to make DesertFilly's rum cake.
-
The rum cake is deeelicious...try it sometime. :P
-
Ben that was so good. But you forgot the asking; What is Woosday?
ThanksSalado TX & 30A FL: Egg Family: 3 Large and a very well used Mini, added a Mini Max when they came out (I'm good for now). Plus a couple Pit Boss Pellet Smokers. -
New egger here....so what IS an ABT?
That's a very nice write-up. Being one of those "got an Egg for Xmas!" posters, I hope to be as knowledgeable as you this time next year! -
What's the big month for planking salmon/tuna steaks? We try to do them year-round.

Welcome to the forum SomedayMommy! You'll be surprised at how fast you get the hang of cooking on the egg. And at the same time, if you're like me, you'll be amazed when someone refers to you as knowledgeable when, after a year and a half of cooking, you still feel like there's tons of new things to do and learn.
An ABT (which I have eaten, but have actually never made) is a jalapeno stuffed with usually a meat and a cheese (the most common seems to be leftover pulled pork, with cream cheese) and wrapped in bacon. It stands for Atomic Buffalo Turd. Appetizing, no? It's one of those forum names that gets thrown around, but confuses newbies. Wait 'til you learn about pig-candy! -
You know, I've never seen a full explanation of Woosday. Someone asked a few weeks ago, but I never saw a response. I do remember seeing (several months ago) that it's named in memory of someone who was a particularly fine photographer, but I've learned nothing else.
-
The only real surge in salmon that I've noticed was during wild river-salmon season in the northwest. Late-spring to early-summer. But people tend to make it year-round.
We just had Raging River maple salmon the night before last. I rarely bother with the plank. -
Ben - you forgot the classic "How do you make pulled pork?" question followed by the ten references directing them to, or posting in its entireity the classic Elder Ward treatise on making NC Style BBQ. That usually comes in June after those who got a BGE for Father's Day start thinking about July 4th.
-
Also the late October thread asking for eggtoberfest recipes!!
-
John's handle is woodoggies and he is an excellent photographer, woosday is in named for him. Its not in memory of him, last I saw he's still kicking. -RP
-
Well done Ben,
You forgot, 2 or 3 days every week a commentary from Mr Spring Chicken about the operating procedure of the water works on the Chicken Ranch
Irish, my plumbing works fine Rog -
Ah, so it IS woodoggies. I figured that woodoggies' name was a coincidence. The post I read several months ago made it sound like the subject of the tradition was, at best, no longer active on the forum. Nice to hear that ain't the case.
-
Ah, I hadn't noticed a trend in pulled pork questions. That one always seemed well distributed. But you're right about the Elder Ward advice. That's the technique I learned from.
-
Nice catch.
Speaking of which...does anyone have the recipe for... -
Oh yeah, there were plenty of those year-round discussions that I didn't include in the list. Like "Where has so-and-so been?" "Hey look! I made ribs for the 99th time!" "What's the best way to light the egg?" etc, etc, etc.
-
In conjunction with the Mayan calendar, what are we all gonna cook on Dec 20th, 2012 for our last supper?
Im going with a Tuna Steak, Shrimp Skewers, Ribs, and a Porterhouse. -
You hit the nail right on the head!!
-
Bacchus, I'm not sure about 12/20, but I can tell you that I'll make a trip to the executives who run Discovery Channel and The History Channel and cook them up a nice meal of spatchcocked CROW on December 21.
-
DAmn accurate
-
Actually, I don't start the mad max countdown. It is programmed into my web pages and it will proceed even if something happens to me. I have left a sealed envelope with my lawyer, ha ha ha ha Do don't try to stop me. mad max turkey countdown WILL happen! :-)The Naked Whiz
-
Pretty good Ben!
-
What if something happens to you lawyer before you?

As appealing as that always sounds, please note that something would ALSO have to happen to his website. And as we all know, should THAT occur, Eggs around the world would cease to operate. No one would know how to make a custom table or a raised grid, and all brands of lump would be replaced with moonrocks, nails, plywood and insulation. Makes that 2012 thing seem like Y2K in comparison, doesn't it? -
i wanna know how the frikkin mayans could predict the end of OUR civilization, but not theirs?
hahaha -
Geez, I admire and respect TNW also and learned a good bit from his site as a newbie, and I realize he's already naked, but you need not stoop and insert your lips that deep.
 -
LOL, interesting perspective. And a valid one.
