My Sister-in-law is finding them by the buckets in Missouri. Wish I could get in on some of that action, I love 'em.
-
What part of Missura? I'm in KC. Man they are good.

I had those for the very first time last spring...I need to start applying the pressure to my aunt to make sure she doesn't leave me out of the loop!
-
Not yet in IL, Mike - the paper reported some have found a few of the early dark morels, but I haven't and I have a private patch in my woods here where I've found them for years. Looks like next week may be the Mother Lode though for us. Trouble is we have thousands of laid off CAT workers and others too so the woods will probably be crawling with hunters!Re-gasketing America one yard at a time.

I need the sun to come out. We have had plently of rain.

I think one of these days...we may be able to find some.
I hear we got an official 13 inches yesterday...on top of the 8 inches the day before. -
Yep IL needs some Sun as well. Last weekend I found a spot where someone beat me to them.

Not yet! I need to go in on Saturday and pick up my replacement fire box. So I plan on signing up then. I am trying to figure out what to cook.
-
Mike,
Little early for them here. Hope they come up before the mosquitoes.

Mike,
Please educate a dumb southerner what are morels? Looks like some sort of mushroom. We don't have them here (I don't think), if we do I have never seen them or heard of them. What do they taste like? I have more, It looks as they are fried, are they? -
yes they are a mushroom only found in the wild - they have never been successfully commercially produced. They are Mother Nature's way of thanking us up here in the North for putting up with the winters and cold weather. OTOH it also gives Mother Nature's little critters such as ticks the ability to leave the deep woods and be delivered to our pets! Here's a pix of the early dark ones.
The ones which Mike pictured are much bigger. They are a delicacy to say the least and the idea in hunting them is that YOU NEVER tell people where you find them much closer than say 15 miles!
They are best pan fried in butter without spices other than salt and pepper with a milk and egg wash to distract from their natural taste. They cook fast and best consumed right out of the pan on the stove! Some hunters measure their success in number of morels, but the "big boys" brag about their morels in pounds!Re-gasketing America one yard at a time. -
Thanks for the education. Is the taste and texture similar to other mushrooms?
-
NO! they are unique. Lovers of these have tried to replicate them using other mushroom species, but it doesn't work. Kinda like inviting people over for prime rib supper and then serving them a bologna sandwich!Re-gasketing America one yard at a time.
-
I will have to try them if I ever get the chance. Thanks for the info.
-
Now my curiosity is aroused. It looks as they grow as far south as Central Alabama and Georgia but none in Florida. They must be good, there are even Morel hunting forums. who wud da thunk?

I'm originally from Jeff City.
-
by any chance you play any football there under Coach Pete Atkins?Re-gasketing America one yard at a time.
-
I played for Helias. Had a 32 game winning streak going into senior year. Jc went on to surpass that record by several games.
You know Pete? -
Yea, Pete started his career in my home town of Centralia, up by Columbia. He coached summer little league. Then I played football for him in junior high in 1957 & 58, before he moved on to Jeff City. He was a legend in Centralia too.Re-gasketing America one yard at a time.

Well that sure is a lot of snow.
