Butt Question?

Howdy Eggers. My question is would cooking two 7-8 lbs butts take less time than cooking a monster 14 lb one? My eggtuition tells me yes, but I wanted to consult all you old pro Eggers.

Been awhile since I posted. Been busy raising a little baby man who just turned one. Nice to see all the usual suspects still around as well as all the new folks.

    Yes. Two butts in the 7-8 pound range should take about the same amount of time as one butt in that same weight range. Just try to keep some space between them for airflow. If you can't then it's OK, space will develop as they cook.

    I would definitely say that 2 smaller ones will take less time that one very large one.

    My question is, where in the world are you finding 14lb butts? About the biggest I've seen in GA barely top 9lbs and those are few and far between.

    The 14lb-er I saw at Costco was a boneless pork shoulder, not a bone-in boston butt. I prefer the bone-in butts.

    Wow, I just re-read that last sentence and it sounds bad. Haha!

    Chances are that what you saw at Costco was a twin pack - there were two butts in there.

    That is usually what I see there anyway.

    I just cooked 2 9.5 pounders 3 days ago. They were done in about 12 hours with a dome of 250. Good luck with it. Mine were ate in an hour flat. They were some happy people!

    cook two butts rather than one big one, two cook same amount of time as one. why two, more surface area means more bark which means more good eats...t

    Thanks,I just grabbed a couple 8lb ones. Plan to smoke them overnight for the office potluck on Weds.

    Good to know, thanks. Guess I figured it was a single shoulder from some genetically engineered mutant pig from Costco Farms. Haha
