Too high temp

I have a med egg and have owed it for approx 5 years. I have learned to use it for the most part from reading the forum posts. I have run into a problem recently however. I have done nothing differently from what I have been accustomed to doing except change from a ceramic to a metal grate. I fill the fire box with lump and start a small amount of lump in a chimney starter and place it on top. I open the bottom damper all the way until I get to about 200 degrees and then close it almost all the way. The problem is I can't keep the temp down any lower than 300 degrees. I have never had this happen before. For example, I cooked a butt last night and saw the temp rising. I closed the wheel on top to almost nil and the fire went out. I opened it to where I normally keep it and again it shot up to 300 + degrees. I installed a new gasket and I can see no smoke escaping from anywhere. Any suggestions.[p]Thanks

Tom,
Try leaving the daisy wheel opened about 1/8" and the bottom vent only about the width of a nickle (or less). I'v found on mine that if I open the bottom more than a nickle's width, I can't keep it below 300. Hope this helps

Tom,[p]Sounds like you're getting a different airflow with the change in grate. Just means that where you were used to setting it is going to change - a slight learning curve to get used to.[p]Tonia

Tom,[p]A couple of things to think about...[p]Is there a possibility your thermometer be reading wrong now and it was a coincidence it happend at or arount the change?[p]Would there be a temp change between the ceramic and metal grate?[p]Kent

And what happens when you use the old grid?[p]If it is still hot, then you have an air leak.[p]Spacey

Newbee,
I see nickel, and quarter width referred to sometimes. Is the width across the diameter of the coin, or the thickness?
-
Bob In Texas,
It is the thickness. Bucky
