Cleaning racks
Options
Has anyone felt the need to clean the grill racks? My father has 2 Big Green Eggs and my mom wants to get him an electric grill cleaner to clean the racks. I told her we should ask the Eggsperts before we bought anything. If you do clean the racks, do you use a metal bristle or a soft bristle? Thanks for your help!!

I love that tool we all got at EGGtoberfest last year, Jenna. When they get really bad I spray them with a degreaser (I like the Dawn Power Dissolver) and power wash them. Our power washer doesn't work very well; recently I took all of the racks from all of our cookers to a car wash. [p]I'm sure other can reccomend a favorite grill brush. But a motorized one might be a fun gift....[p]JCA

Jenna,[p]I think you'll find that most people don't strain to get them clean because of the tedious handwork involved. On the other hand, things like fish can pull apart on a dirty grid. Some folks just "self-clean" by turning up the heat in the Egg for a while like you would on a self-cleaning oven. [p]Somehow the idea of an electric grill cleaner sounds like one of those things that would break quickly, but it also sounds interesting. Can you provide details of what you are looking at?

Jenna, my mother (89 years old) sticks her small grill in the dishwasher after every few cooks. Looks brand new,

Jenna,[p]Clean? Racks? I'm not sure I follow you on this. Besides, I can get nice grill marks without even starting a fire in the egg - how handy is that?[p]RE

Jenna,
They sell a cermic grate brush. It's manual thou. Looks like the power one is for cast iron, would damage the coating on the BGE grate.

Morning Jenna:[p]I very seldom cleaned the grids before I created my outdoor kitchen, but with a sink big enough to hold the large grid I will soak & then wash after every 2 or 3 cooks.[p][p]The link below is to the website showing the creation of the kitchen and some better pics.[p]Have a GREAT day!

Jenna, I bought a 20 inch diameter round baking pan from a baker supply store. I use it to store and soak/clean my grids. The Dawn stuff, Julie suggested, is a great cleaner...

FULSOL, a Fuller product, is the best degreaser that I've found. It's much more effective than DAWN. I haven't tried the Oven-Off-For-Grills yet.

Jenna,
That is the only time I fire up my Weber Summit - to clean the racks for my BGE!

SSN686,
Do u have both hot & cold water out there ???

Sandbagger,
I found a hot water heater pan works well. This one appears to be concave in the middle but others are flat.

Wise One, I got one of those two, but it's just too big to fiddle with. Mine is plastic. Tom

Morning eggaholic:[p]Yes, there is a small (3.85 gal) "instant" water heater under the sink. Works great for most times I need hot water.[p]Have a GREAT day!

Jenna,Once a month or so I put mine in a heavy duty plastic bag being careful not puinch holes in it, then pour in a couple cups of ammonia, tie the top of the bag tight and leave it set for about 24-36 hours. This sofens the goo and makes it easy to clean with a high pressure rig ( car wash if you don't have your own ) or a little soap/watger/scrub brush and garden hose. Sometimes I just open the vents up at the end of a cook and let the remp go up to 600-700F and burn the grills clean.

Jenna,[p]I clean my grids before every cook. Once they are clean, I spray them liberally with Pam before I cook with them. Cleanup is a breeze and they look as good as new, even after years of use.[p]Tonia

Jenna,
how does he clean the grills now, some of us dont really get into that. i sometimes hit it with a tin foil ball or scrape it with my lawnranger grid lifter, but not all the time. some people just dont get carried away with it
fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it -
Jenna,
You mean were suppose to clean them???

Wise One,about four inches cut off the bottom of a plastic barrel works good, I have used the lid off or the 32 gallon trash barrel at a contest before, A little Dawn, some hot water, let soak, and hose off.
