Pork butts and smoking wood amount

I've been smoking a lot of briskets and butts lately and have gotten the smoke level nailed on briskets with mesquite mixed in the lump in layers. Does it seem about right that butts or any other pork product for that matter require a lot less smoking wood? I find it very easy to over smoke pork. Today I'm doing a 14.5# butt for a buddy and am contemplating just throwing 3-4 chunks of hickory on top vs mixing in a bunch throughout the coals. Any thoughts on this?

Sorry, I can't offer any insight, but I'll be watching for others' advice.

I don't think you could oversmoke a butt.

    14.5lbs?!  That's a big a$$ butt!

    Mix it in, no worries.

3-4 chunks would be ideal for ribs or a loin.

    Agreed.

I hate it when I go to the kitchen for food and all I find are ingredients!
