After six years of patience, I bought an egg and have Boston Butt to show for it

Six years ago, I began a job that had me visiting a local hardware store once a week. It was then, in July 2007, that I saw my first Big Green Egg. I was blown away -- I lifted the lid, caressed the thick ceramic and marveled at the craftsmanship. Problem was, I had just bought an enormous stainless steel gas grill at a big home improvement store. There was no way my wife was going to go for this egg showing up in the backyard.
Every week, I'd return to the store. Every week, I'd drool.
Well, next month I turn 40 and a few weeks ago, my wife encouraged me to just go buy the thing as a birthday present. So I did.
I then found this forum, immediately got to work looking at recipes and last week made a seven-pound Boston Butt after reading recommendations here. I stole a rub from Hashmaker, I got a drip pan, a placesetter and a thermometer.
I woke up at 3 a.m. and fired up the egg. By 4 a.m. the pork was in the egg. By 5 p.m., I was double-wrapping it in heavy duty foil and putting it in my cooler. At 6 p.m., the neighbors came running over as I unwrapped the most beautiful butt I have ever seen in my life. It tasted even better than it looked.
Thank you all for your valuable posts here. You've made it possible for me to blow my wife's mind on a regular basis -- something not (ahem) easily (ahem) accomplished (ahem).

Congrats and welcome to the cult.  A fine example of what a first cook can look like with some proper research and preparation.  Nicely done.

Congrats on the new BGE and a successful cook! Sounds like you planned your cook perfectly. I would give up a lot of things in my life before I would give up my egg.

The first time I made a pork butt (6.5 lbs), I put it on the egg at 9:00am, monitored the temp and things were coming along nicely. The guy at the butcher shop said it would take 1-1.5 hrs/pound. At 3:00, my wife says "who's going to help us eat all this?" So she calls her family and tells them all "Come over for dinner - we're eating at 7.". (10 of us total) They show up and we drink beer and play catch with the kids and have a bonfire in the fire pit. Good times....

Then 'the stall" happened. I didn't believe it could take THAT long! Needless to say, my mother-in-law went home at 11:00pm and she was h-angry! The good news is that my wife, my brother-in-law, and I had a feast when that thing finally got done at midnight! Not sure how much the booze had to do with how good it was but everyone that left sure missed out! Thankfully she has forgiven me and will gladly come back and eat from the egg. She still raves about how good the prime rib was at Christmas.

    Happy Eggin'!

Welcome aboard. Nice looking cook. Great fo first time. You might want to look up mickey's turbo butt method. The out come is fanatastic and a lot shorter cook time. I can do a 9 pound butt in 6.5 hours or less with his method.
