I am now convinced I need to get an accurate thermometer and not trust the one installed. It appears that most are pretty pleased with the Maverick. Any other suggestions?
Maverick is great for low and slow cooks but most of my cooks are faster. Look up how to calibrate your dome and buy yourself a Thermapen, you will use it on every cook you do.
I have the Maverick Et 732 and love it but the thermapen is a must have
I'd buy a maverick Et 732 and a thermapen. Nothing will come your way you can't handle with that. Calibrate your dome thermometer. It's trustworthy and will be used for anything over 350 in my book. Which, like smoking dawg said, are the majority of your cooks.
The maverick isn't a substitute for the dome thermometer. You'll want to use the dome thermo on direct cooks to control the heat level (grilling, pizzas, etc) - a maverick probe will burn out using it direct or at high temps. Calibrate it with boiling water.
