We're gong to re-do our kitchen. I'm letting the wife handle this even though I do all of the cooking. We're going to replace our gas range but keep the size -- 30" I believe. We don't need a large unit because I cook on the egg 5 out of 7 days a week at least.
Anyway, I do saute a lot on the burners, and also fry bacon, eggs, etc... We're going to install some type of exhaust hood above the new unit. We can either get one that vents the exhaust outside or that has a charcoal filter and just recalculates the air. Does anyone have any recommendations or experience, either good or bad, with these options?
thanks in advance,
John

I have had both and really like the one that vents to the out side. The charcoal one leaves a smell in your house.

You should be able to get the information on sizing from the data sheets on your range. You have to be careful not to go too big because you should have an air makeup unit to balance the pressure. I needed 1200 cfm and had to install a rather large air system. Furnaces and fireplaces will start to draught the wrong way if you take out too much air.

The ones with the charcoal filter get expen$ive to use, if you replace the filter as often as needed. Also, they just blow the hot air back into your face.
Go with the vented hood.

Cook the bacon on the EGG. Best bacon in the world, and no inside smell

We don't cook indoors any longer. Sans the microwave, our real meals go on the Egg. Saved $50K on a kitchen remodel that way.Visit my blog, dedicated to my Big Green Egg Recipies at http://www.bigtsbge.blogspot.com You can also follow my posts on FaceBook under the name Keep On Eggin' or the link http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Keep-On-Eggin/198049930216241

I would but I usually cook just enough for me in the morning, so it would be a little overkill for my breakfast.

The remodel is more because we entertain a lot and people always wind up hanging out in the kitchen. The floor is lousy, the counters are old, the cabinets are old, the stove is not very good, etc...

Luckily we have a drafty old house! Since the range is only about 30" I guess we won't need a very large hood unit.

I think that it is much better to have the ones that vent.
If you want to spend some extra money, you should be able to find one that has a fan that can be installed near the exterior vent on the house and it will be a lot quieter.
