I have a propane torch to light the BGE. The problem is the torch keeps going out and never really gets the lump going either. Any thoughts here???

some propane torch's will go out when inverted, get a mapp torch or a hose and tip for the propane

What Pat says.
A Mapp torch with the lighting attachment is top notch. You can turn the flame on and lock it in on so you don't have to keep the button pushed in, then unlock and turn the gas off when you're done .The hot tip cools off in a few minutes, so it won't melt anything that it touches.Judy in San Diego -
Judy, you can see my mapp tank, hose and tip in this picture. Keeps the tank away from the fire for those of us prone to dropping things.

Yes Pat, I can see you're able to keep FAR away from the fire! Good thinking!
Are you in a state of permanent construction or something'?Judy in San Diego -
Pretty much   But I think I'm starting to run out of things that can break or go wrong

I have the exact same thing as Pat, love it! Made by Bernz-O-Matic, got mine at Lowe's

Pat, what a setup....Salado TX & 30A FL: Egg Family: 3 Large and a very well used Mini, added a Mini Max when they came out (I'm good for now). Plus a couple Pit Boss Pellet Smokers.

Mickey,, Thats my dealers trailer, Grillmandan here, I use it every year for superbowl. I cooked on his egg for 4 years before he convinced me to get my own

try "The Golf Club" from BBQ Guru it works great with propane or mapp. You don't have to stand there and hold it, you can bury it in the lump and let it go for about 60 seconds, I light my med & large in 3 places and have great results, check it out at the BBQ Guru's website

I think it is the torch and not the propane. My old torch would go out as soon as you turned it upside down. I bought one of the MAPP torches and I use propane in it instead of MAPP, it works great and is much cheaper than MAPP and is only slightly slower. I am retired and speed is not a problem
