Grill Brush SS vs. Brass

I have had the triangle Brass Weber brushes (Weber model 6424)that I really liked, but as they got trashed out I began trying to find more of the same but all I can find in that style is the same shape brush but with Stainless Steel bristles. I know that they say it wont scratch my porcelan grill but I have my doubts. I bought a few on eBay that said they were brass only to find out they sent me SS

! Am I wrong about the SS damaging my grill surfaces or do I send these back and keep looking for Brass?????

These brushes are the best Ive found so far. I just think that I need Brass!
The photo on the Auction shows a pic of Brass, Weber website shows a pic of Brass, but as you read it says SS. maybe they dont make Brass ones anymore.

I just stick my grates in the dish washer every few cooks and then clean with a brass brush. Hardware stores have some that are not BBQ specific and reasonably priced.

It should take very little effort, and minimal wear on a grill brush to clean the porcelain grid. Even a chunk of discarded tin foil held with tongs will do it. Whatever greasy gunk left on it from the previous cook will char up and practically fall of when reheated.

I wore the porcelain off my grate a long time ago and don't miss it. I started out with a stainless brush that with time started to throw bristles. Not wanting to have surgery for little sharp stainless steel wires perforating my whossy whatsit I ditched it and picked up a brass brush at Wally World. I think it was on sale for 99¢. It must have been built better then the SS one I had because it is holding up great. I only make an attempt to clean my grate if it is really nasty which is very rare. I figure heating up the egg gets it plenty hot enough to kill anything on it. A high temp cleaning burn is a good start and then a brass brush should be all you need.

I don't always clean my grill, But when I do it's with Brass. :laugh:

Actually I havn't even had the chance to fire it up yet. Been on call.

The Weber brushes are no longer made of brass, but the steel they use is safe for use on porcelain grids. Weber makes several grills with porcelain grates that are less durable than the eggs.

Better still ditch the bristles - checkout the grill wizard, then you can just replace the scrubby bit with whatever you fancy - stainless, copper etc.
I'm not connected but am a very satisfied user - wholeheartedly recommend. I always found those brass bristle brushes got clogged in the 10% that actually gets used.

Garnerac - I've been using one of these brass brushes for almost 2 years, 4-5 times each week.

I highly recommend, and they are made in the good 'ol U.S. of A.

If I hadn't gotten (and been so happy with) my up-grade cast iron grid, I would have been disappointed with the measly 1 year I got out of my original BGE ceramic grid, before most all of the ceramic had flaked off.
It's a good idea in theory, but different in reality.
I think, in hind-sight that stainless grids or cast iron grids are the way to go.
I generally always use a cheap brass bristle brush.
Works very well on a hot grid. Stainless would be fine too, I would think.

My L is going on 5 years old. I use it 2-4 times a week and still have the original Ceramic grid. I have been cleaning it with Brass which is my whole point! I guess Im sticking with Brass. In fact I ordered (on eBay) the exact one as above with the white handle.
