On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger landed in Galveston with 2,000 troops and announced to the Texas slaves that they had been freed 2 years ago.
It is a large celebration for many in this state (and others, I've heard).
Not intending to sound stereotypical, we're having spareribs, corn, and watermelon to acknowledge the festivities.
