XL sear n' roastr'

Disclaimer- this post is just thoughts and ideas of an old county guy that has access to toys.
For steaks and such most or many like to sear and then finish with a roast to the desired doneness. Also many say that the XL uses way too much lump. So in my simple mind there was something to work on. So made this 'thing' to half the grid area of the XL and fill it to the top of the fire ring with lump for searing and save the other half for the roasting. These ideas are still in the very early stages and I did not have @alls enough to try a nice steak so 1st attempt was with burgers. I put a piece of metal on the searing side and my infrared thermo maxed at 1000* and the roasting side was at about 400*, dome reading 450 or so. In this setup I don't think the dome temp is of much value. Times, temps, and etc still need some work but 1st trial looks like it is something worth working on. pics below. Any ideas or thoughts would be nice. I didn't get many pics on this test. Mike

BRILLIANT!!!! Patent one for the XL and L....QUICK! I think it is a VERY CLEVER idea!
-
Thanks for the wonderful idea. Along with the Lump Reducer this is a big hit.
Go for it ! -
Thanks Hoss, I think I can work something out with Loney for this one too. Mike
-
That is a great idea. That set up could be used for indirect in place of a plate setter.

Mike, I've thought of lots of ideas of uses for this setup. This one is pretty crude but I think it is worth working on. Mike

When I had a Weber Kettle. They made a container that placed one the "charcoal" on oneside. More blushes.
That reminded me of that.

Mike - outstanding idea
Sear on one side and roast on the other - brilliant! -
Mike,
Great Idea! Have you ever looked at a Primo? I got somethin comin' soon too.

Frank, more testing needs to be done but 1st test worked as good or better than I hoped. Dome thermo temps don't have much value in this setup. Mike
-
Little Steven, I've seen the Primos but have really not looked at them closely and have never used one. You don't mean I'm not the 1st one to invent to wheel do you?? Mike
-
Mike,
They have something similar. They make an oval cooker with a split firebox. I think the barrier is ceramic but I could be wrong. Just asked cause I thought it was brilliant of you to come up with the idea on your own. I have looked pretty closely at the Primo and I didn't think of it. I'm making one tomorrow. I have two eggs at work.

Ain't nuthin wrong with a Weber!Alot of us learned the ropes there! BTW,Some of em still win comps!
-
I cooked so much, I went threw one a year.
How stupid?
Mike -
AGREED but they work til ya learn better!
-
Steve, it really worked great! I just need a few more cooks to get time and temps down. Mike
-
Mike,
Came damn close to buying a Primo for that feature. Really cool idea!

I still have a brand new one in the box in the garage. And know how to use it too. MIke

Here ya go on the steak cook.
I've been playing with the idea for some time and found two angle brackets provide the greatest flexibility to change lump formations: quarter to three quarter size fireboxes. These are in production now.

That's how I did turkeys in the Weber before I got the egg.
When I gave the Weber to my dad, I kept the side-charcoal thingies, and use those in the XL if I want to keep the lump on one side. Works great. -
I do something similar with the charcoal holders from my old Weber (for indirect cooking on the kettle).
Another idea might be to offer a LRR that is bigger diameter than your current one, but half moon. Or one that is smaller diameter and taller. I like my LRR, but sometimes want something just a bit different. Used it tonight when doing crumpets and ham on the XL. -
Man thats GREAT! Always like to see new ideas like that come out that havent been done before. At least I haven't seen it. Don't think my Medium has enough grill space to be effective but I love the idea. Made a home made raised grill a long time back. Simple desighn but works like a charm. The bottom of brackets are bent 90 degrees back tward the center of Egg and slide between fire box and fire ring. Grill pan is on it but stock rack works well to. I just toss them in the coals at the end of cook to burn them off.

Here are a couple more pics for those that may want to make one or improve on it. Mine is for the older style XL firebox and fire ring. Measurements 19 3/4" across the top, 16" across the bottom, 7 7/8" high, and has 7 each 3/4" holes. I left loose for expansion and air flow. This was one of those quick put together things so is pretty crude looking but it did work just fine. Mike

Looks Beautiful to me and I don't even own an XL......yet.
