Ceramic Cap No-Fall-Again Fix

After reading some posts yesterday about shuting down the egg, using the ceramic cap....... reminded me of how mine slipped out of my welder gloved hand and shattered a few years ago. Bought another one, then JB welded the broken one, then wired them both up. I used a thick insulated wire, and twisted them tight. No more slips in 2 years.

Nice!!! I really like that.

Nice idea Mike.
And you could hang it from a hook if you had egg-mates!!

I used to have egg-mates, but never trusted the cap on the hook. Didn't want another fixit job. The gray JB Weld clashes with the green cap.

Nice job on the cap handle. Was noticing the thermometer on egg in the background, looks like some thing different than the OEM device. Being new to BGE's, I thought I would ask about it, if that really is a thermometer. Could be I'm mis-reading the pic. Thanks,

Nice idea, I have several times almost lost the ceramic cap when using gloves.
Thanks for posting.

Thanks. What you see are 2 wooden spacers between the egg and backside of the thermometer. I upgraded to a Tel-Tru with a 5" stem, which protruded to far into the egg, especially for the Thanksgiving turkey. I now have the spring clip on the outside instead of the wood.

FlaMike, thanks for the information. I've looked at the Tel-Tru as a replacement for my OEM. In reading their info at the NakedWhiz, it's stated that the 5" gives the most accurate temp vs the 2.5", but the 5" can interfer with the meat, which is what you described. By shortening the length of the probe in the dome, do you have to factor, +/- by some amount, the actual thermometer reading to get the dome temp? Sorry this is wordy, but your post gave me an opportunity to ask the question. Thanks again.

I don't.
Can't see how a few inches into or out of the dome could make a difference worth measuring. Mine sits into the dome about 2.5 inches. Seems to work just fine. -
FlaMike, thanks for the response. Re the NakedWhiz information I mentioned, it would seem if you used the 5" probe with spacers to shorten it to 2-3" you would have to add the 15%. I'm about to order the 5". Sounds like you're happy with using it as a 5" or a 3". That's what I was looking for. Thanks again for continuing the thread.
