raised grid/fire ring question

I have been researching everyones raised grate setups. I find the 3 level grate system very interesting.
it seems that most people who use the 3 grate system, don't use a plate setter.
it makes more sense to me to use a platesetter and remove the firering, instead of using the fire ring and no plate setter.
Should the egg not be operated w/out the fire ring? What am I missing here? Obviously something.
Anyway, did some brats as my first cook last night. Cooked them direct(plate setter is on order) at 350. I resisted urges to open the dome, and when I did, they were over done! The Cooks fault!
Regardless, I was super impressed how easy the egg came to and help temps. It was amazing.
Compared to my old set up, I felt like I was cheating.
Also, I now understand why lump is really the only fuel choice for the egg.
Finally, a big thanks to this forum and its members. Knowledge offered up here has been very educational and indespensible.

The old 3 grid setup from BGE came with a 2" fire ring, not sure how they do the new setup. -RP
