Can I replace this vent in the middle of winter? I live in Southern Illinois and our temp is 15 degrees outside. Is it easy to replace and what silicone is reccomended? Good luck to all. Tom

As long as the silicone can cure at your ambient temps you should be fine..I would try to use a hi temp silicone...sorry to say...but that vent is in definate need of replacing..

Tom I have redone two, one with regular silicone and one with high temp and both have been fine.

Tom,
Man is that egg sitting directly on wood? I would look underneath it if it is. If you are going to change the vent, I would have extra hardware handy because I don't think the nuts on the inside of the egg will release easily. The silicone is just RTV or so I have been told.

It's the original vent from 15 or so years ago. I have a new vent in the garage but just never put it on the egg. I'm a sorry a** lazy egger. Good luck to all. Tom

Thanks for the info.

It is setting on a 2" stone. Thanks for the info.

Temps here in Southern Ontario are supposed to go above freezing later this week. Keep the silicone inside til you are ready for it. Maybe even in some hot water.

Tom,
Understanding that you have been egging much longer than I...
I have seen quite a few pictures of charred tables with the same setup as your 2" paver. The green ceramic feet keep from allowing the heat transfer through to the wood.
A well worn egg is a happy egg. Keep it up. -
i dont believe the origional silicone was high temp, the high temp stuff is a bright orange. easy to do but i would wait for warmer weather or bring the base into the house to warm up for the siliconefukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

how about heating up the egg with a small burn. twww.ceramicgrillstore.com ACGP, Inc.

The silicone that was used on my 14 year old egg is bright orange and it is UGLY. I hope you are neater than the person who replaced my lower vent. It was easy to replace, so no worries there.

Faith, have you considered painting it pink?
:P

just use a painter's razor blade and trim it off. Use light pressure both horizontally and vertically slightly cutting deeper with each pass. In a couple minutes you'll cut/trim it off. twww.ceramicgrillstore.com ACGP, Inc.

just replace the vent without silicone. in the spring, if it is a problem, take it off and apply the stuff at a better temp.
you could make a quick gasket of felt if you wanted, temporarily, if you felt it was leaking. i frankly don't see any silicone on yours anyway -
Tom, this was my table after years of sitting on a 2" paver, some have actually had fires. I would use the feet. If you decide to use them but don't have the extras email me your address and I'll send some out. Our local dealer is great and has gave me most of the feet I have shipped out to others.

ok that is scary looking :blink:Egging on two larges + 36" Blackstone griddle

It's all good now but some here have had really bad fires so it pays to take all the precautions you can. FWIW I was one of the ones that always said you don't need the feet or an air gap below the egg.
