Do pork butt(s) next weekend, but wondering on if I should do 1 8lb'er or 2 6lb'ers? Any suggestions? I was also going to make ABT's and Frito scoops?

10 adults and 2 small children, oh and two dogs:).

  • Good pork calculator here. Double that idea and invite a few of us to come by :woohoo:

What size egg? Fit as much as you can on there. Cook time shouldn't change much. Freeze the rest for later.

I'd go with the 2 6-pounders. As they say, you can't be too rich, too thin or have too much smoked butt around the house. :woohoo:

    Easy peasy...

No need to make it hard, a very common formula on other forums is to take the number of people eating and divide by 2.4.

If you want to match CW's formula then divide the mouths by 1.6 the results will be exact and you won't have to go through a bunch of different math steps.

    Average Joe,

I agree totally.Butts are cheap at the worst of times and it doesn't cost much more to do a bunch. Had a family function last weekend and had to buy packaged stuff for ABT's. Yeuck.

More is better! :) You can always freeze extra. I always make an extra and vacuum freeze in meal size packages.
  • If you are going to fire up the egg and babysit it overnight or all day, why not fill it up??
The more the merrier, I say. Take them off, foil them up, then do your appetizers on the egg.
    Have fun.

Happily egging on my original large BGE since 1996... now the owner of 6 eggs. Call me crazy, everyone else does!

  • I am with the majority here. If you don't want to freeze it all. Guest always love to take home a little Egged pork. Left overs don't last long around here my 18 year olds friends always seem to show up when I smoke a bunch of butts. They all want Eggs now.
