I am firing up the XL Egg for an all nighter with 6 Boston Butts and no sooner than I light the Egg and close the dome the bottom falls out. Little cousin is getting married and I am cooking for a big family get together and rehearsal dinner. I am just glad all I have to do is the BBQ. I am glad I went today and bought a couple of rain caps for the Eggs. Will post pics when the rain stops.

From your post I thought the bottom fell out of your XL. Consider yourself lucky you were only talking about the rain. :woohoo: :woohoo:
-
No worries,eggs are RAINPROOF!
-
Yes, the bottom fell out of the sky not the Egg, that would make for a bad week. I was going to fire up both Eggs but was able to cram all 6 of them on the XL. These are 9 to 11 pounders and just bearly touching. I have had 7 on it before on their sides.
Breaking in the new rain cap.
The piggies are tucked in for the night.
-
Dang does that look great.

Luckily for you these BUTTS will shrink in a little while and give you plenty of room to finish the cook with no problems.Unlike other BUTTS that have a tendency to EXPAND!!! :woohoo: :woohoo:

   They are not too cramped the are barley touching, I just put the Maverick probes in and waterproofed the transmitter in a Ziplock container. It was hard to find a spot for the grid probe. We are good for the night now.

It's a good thing they don't have a XXL or I would have to get one. It seems like after that one gigantic cook I did I keep getting volunteered for big cooks. :ermm: A funeral a Derby Party, an office party and now a wedding rehersal dinner. I am gonna have to start getting paid then maybe the buisness would slow down.

You are a good man Eddie!!! Sorry about the weather...
-
We are in a lull before the storm. That was just a little rain, just enough to get everything wet. That stuff you are getting tonight we should have late morning or early afternoon.
-
Well... It was not much fun... lots of close lightening... I hope ya'll just get the rain...
-
Are you a night owl every night?
-
Eddie,
Are you using a Guru or DigiQ?
Another question - from the picture, it looked like you had foil out to the edges. Is there good airflow around the foil? - just curious.
looks great! Can't wait to see the after pics ! -
Not every night.... Hee hee
-
Eddie,
Where did you pick up the kewl rain hat? Looks like a standard off the shelf piece. Home Despot or Lowe's carry those?
- Joe -
No gadgets just a Maverick. The foil is just a drip pan and I covered the plate setter with foil just to reduce the mess outside the drip pan. Good air flow because nothing is restricting flow other than the plate setter
-
True Value Hardware had them. A 6" rain hat fits perfect right off the shelf. Home Depot and Lowes didn't have them here. I think Ace Hdw carries them as well. It has worked great. It is really coming down now and there just about done.

Eddie,
I misread what happened. I thought the bottom of the egg fell out. Rain is better.

I should have been clearer. When we southerners use the term it most often refers to the rain. And as for the timing, after a little last night we didn't get any more until it was time to pull the butts off the Egg and right before I go out it starts pouring again in buckets. My patio is ankle deep.

The butts were done at 1300 and were wraped in foil and put into the cooler. Had enough lump left to do a little clean burn to clean up a bit. We pulled a good bit of the meat at 1600 (still as hot as when I took it off the Egg) and it was time to go. Everything turned out great and the piggy meat was a hit with the crowd.
