Silicone Gasket Adhesive

My gaskets fell off yesterday due to adhesive failure. I have anticipated it every since replacing with Rutland gaskets. I am going to install new Rutland gaskets using Rutland silicone sealant rated to 500 degrees. Can anyone give me any performance history for silicone used as the gasket adhesive? Thanks!

maybe some minor fumes the first time you go high temp (if it is soon after you apply it). again, those fumes aren't going to kill you if the carbon monoxide hasn't....

no fumes after that that i ever recalled.

wears like iron. i didn't even clean the rim, and there's no chance of it coming off any time soon.

i used silicone automotive sealant (copper permatex), but the red high heat ones are all rated about 600. your rim doesn't ever really get that hot for that long

Thanks for your info. Maybe I should get some of the copper permatex since it is rated to 700 degrees rather then the rutland's rated to 500 degrees. The gaskets wear like iron so I am looking for a long term permanent fix.

I use the 600* RTV sealant and have had a couple years of hard, high heat egging done and my gasket still looks like the day I put it on.

I really don't think the silicone will let go without some concerted effort. I've never read of anyone here using silicone adhesive that had it let go either. I've used it to attach gaskets to 5 different eggs now with no issues on any of them.

you could skip the rutland altogether and just run a bead of permatex around the bottom rim, and put a piece of plastic wrap between it and the upper lid rim (no gasket on the upper). after it curs, remove the plastic wrap and trim the squeezed out overhanging extra stuff.

someone here did it and swore by the method. don't honestly recall if it was plastic wrap or wax paper used as bond breaker....

could maybe spray the bondbreaker with silicone lubricant to keep it from sticking

  • Fidel,

    Is that with the rutland?
