Which gasket?

The top gasket on my LBGE let go in two places. I called Bruce, at the Mothership, told him my problem and asked what my options were. He said that he would send me the 'new' felt gasket, I guess they had problems with the glue on the previous ones. He also said that I could get the Nomex gasket instead. His opinion was one was as good as the other, being he had one of each on his two larges and there wasn't much difference other than the felt being easier to install. I asked about using 3M-77 vs. Permatex Copper, his opinion was that the 3M-77 was better, for the Nomex gasket. Looking at the archives, it's a mixed opinion. Seeing that there have been some new installations lately, what is the prefered gasket and glue. As always, thanks in advance for your replys.

Plain nomex(no factory adhesive) and 3M 77. Most importants things are to mask the Egg very well as there is a real overspray issue with the 77, and don't stretch the gasket at all. Don't worry about the nomex bunching up on the interior circumference as you attach it. A couple of cooks and it will look perfect. Mine is on 7 months now and no problems.

well.... as a rutland user with permatex adhesive, i'd still say you should still listen to Bruce at the mothership.ed egli avea del cul fatto trombetta -Dante

Went through 2 grey ones with the adhesive on the back so I'm no fan of those for sure. Bruce sent me a white one which I assume is the nomex and I used the Super 77 with a mask. I'm going to do some below 400 cooks later this week to help the curing process and then fire it up to 650 next week and cross my fingers.
What does the nomex gasket look like anyway?Joe - I'm a reformed gasser-holic aka 4Runner Columbia, SC Wonderful BGE Resource Site: http://www.nakedwhiz.com/ceramicfaq.htm and http://www.nibblemethis.com/ and http://playingwithfireandsmoke.blogspot.com/2006/02/recipes.html

I lived your EXACT problem a month ago, Large Egg and the glue failed. Mothership quickly sent me a new Nomex gasket. Dont be fooled by some posts - to do the job correctly takes time and patience. Seperate the dome from the bottom of the egg and completely remove and clean the old gasket and glue (I used Acitone, a wire brush, and time). When done my surface was nearly white. I then sprayed the Super 77 into a plastic cup and applied it using a brush (much easier then taping to catch overspray). Applied new Nomex gasket and let dry for 24 hours at 70+ degrees ambient. Then, do a short, low temp cook or two. Let the new glue set-up with a few of these heat cycles. I have had no problems and I am 10 cooks into my new gasket now.
ONLY thing I would do differently in hind sight is request a Nomex Gasket WITHOUT adhesive already applied. Combining Super 77 and the pre-applied adhesive does not make sense to me and can cause too much adhesive. -

I did this as well. However, I was afraid to use my Dremel or a wire brush as the instructions stated to gently scrape and do not remove the ceramic. I was afraid of possible damage. I was able to scrape a lot of adhesive but it was far from white when I was complete. You think a Dremel with a a fine grit sandpaper attachment would have been ok?

Genius! That would have been much easier. Great idea.Joe - I'm a reformed gasser-holic aka 4Runner Columbia, SC Wonderful BGE Resource Site: http://www.nakedwhiz.com/ceramicfaq.htm and http://www.nibblemethis.com/ and http://playingwithfireandsmoke.blogspot.com/2006/02/recipes.html

I looks just like the one Bruce sent you.

I used one of these when I did mine. It only lasts about 4 or 5 gasket replacements though.

Was told by BGE do not to use any power tools/sanders as that will void the warranty.
Use heat and a scraper. If you have access to a heat shrink fan (hot hair blower) or use propane/mapp torch. With either work in short distances 8 to 10 inches or so at a time.
Then 91% alcohol to final clean. Takes about 15 minutes on a large both surfaces. Fast & easy.

I used that as well and while I had the dome apart ran it around the inside a couple of times and up the chimney - looks like a brand new dome!
