Holy Cow....Amazon has the Maverick ET-7 for just $39.99. That's the same as the best available price on the ET-37 (and I'm in Amazon Prime, so it's free shipping!).

eT-73 is a better unit for what it does.
The dual probes on the et-7 are both meat probes. The et-73 has a meat and pit probe. -

yup...buyer beware...7 and 73 are not the same thing - are they?Re-gasketing the USA one yard at a time

I just bought the ET-73 from http://www.partshelf.com/index.html for $39.95.
-
I accidentally purchased the ET-7 and didn't like it. Sent it back for a refund, got the ET-73 when it was on sale for $34 and it is much better for egging. Here is the ET-73 link.

If you look a few posts down...
You will see a link for the ET-73 at $37.

Don't get the ET-7. Been there done that and ended up buying the ET-73 as many folks advised me.
Thought I was getting a better 'deal'. So I guess I can say my ET-73 actually cost me $80 plus 2 shipping fees.
You will find out the folks on the forum will generally lead you in the right direction. Several people have now said get the ET-73... Listen to them!

I did the same thing! Just sent back the 7. Have a 73 on the way. -
CW- can you still use a meat probe as a pit probe?
My pit probe was fried so I replaced it with the one with the heavier duty wire- but it was a meat probe.
Will I have problems using it as a pit probe? -
Theoretically no.

Oh, I do! Slavishly! i just got confused. Thought the ET-7 was more highly recommended. But having read the replies here, I went back and saw that, indeed, the ET-73 seems the better machine.
I sure wish they'd invent one that could be used all the way up to 700.... -
the et7 looks to have the preset meat doneness screens, you dont want that. i think maverick could have done a better job building and designing the et73 as ithink its not built well and that the logic of setting it up is idiotic, but its the one that does what we want and the price isnt bad, taken care of it lasts along time without changing batteries, becareful with the tiny fragile switches though.fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

MY ET-73 worked wonderfully for about the first dozen cooks. My eggs are about 100ft off my back deck so the wireless aspect is great for me. Setup was easy also.
However the last time I used it the grid temp reading kept going nuts, flashing between what I believe to be an accurate reading and reading all over the board. I put it back in the box and havent touched it since.
Now I use a thermopen and a pair of binoculars (Fidels idea). I can see the dome gauge from my back window, and I walk out to measure meat temps when I feel its needed. -
Hmm...while the meat probe thermometers might not work reliably (or at high temperature) to give you remote control info, I'd imagine you could very easily rig up a dome thermometer that will report via remote control, even up to 750 degrees.
Gauging ambient temp (i.e. dome temp) is much less fancy tech.
OTOH, if the binoculars are working....

mine was broken first use, stupid switch inside the unit(dumb place to put it) broke. sent it back for a replacement and that one has worked well for about 4 years it seems. i dont get the advertised 100 feet, its more like 30 feet thru a glass window. changed the battery in the transmitter unit for the first time last weekend. another trick is whatever temp your cooking at, turn the dial therm so that the needle reads up, its amazing how far away you can see the needle and if it isnt pointed up you know you have to check on things. i can actually see the needle from my boat while trolling by the house.fukahwee maineyou can lead a fish to water but you can not make him drink it

I bought the ET-73 this summer and it seems to work great. I do agree that the distance isn't what they advertise it to do but the unit does work up to about 30' away. Here is a link to a webb site that sells them for 39.99 http://4thegrill.com/mavet73.html

Mine is typically more than 50 feet from the kitchen window, but less than 100 and it's been fine.
(Except for my probe being fried)
