Tragedy strikes a new egg - parts needed

A friend of mine recently purchased a brand new small egg. He only used it a few times before tragedy struck. He had the egg sitting on a shelf which he bumped while moving a few things around. The small fell down and the base broke into 20+ pieces. He ruled out using JB Weld due to the size and number of the pieces.

He has been calling all the local dealers to inquire about a replacement part but most of them want $250-$300 for the small base alone and he can get a whole new egg for not much more.

He tried to find replacements parts online but most of the internet dealers have removed the BGE products from their sites or at least removed the prices. Is something going on where BGE is now cracking down on the internet dealers? Are replacement parts normally this expensive?

If anyone has a base for a small egg in TN, KY, or AL then I am sure he would be interested...

tell him to drive to atlanta!!! i had a friend who won a med and set it on a picnic table, he walked away and a big wind came up and blew his egg off the table... long story short.. he bought a new base from the mothership... so if he can make a call and decipher if the gas is worth it driving to atlanta might be a better solution....

    happy eggin

If he bought it with a credit card, they might handle it under their warranty. Have him call and check.

Gas from Nashville to Atlanta would cost him about $150 roundtrip not including his time, meals, or wear on the car. I was totally surprised that the local dealers couldn't offer him a better price on the part. Also surprised to see that many of the internet parts dealers have pulled their info down. He will probably call the mothership on Monday and maybe their price will be better but then of course he has to pay shipping which I hear is not cheap...

The credit card route is a good option. I will suggest it.

I priced a firebox for my old egg and it was $145 plus shipping.

So did the guys at The Hearth & Grill Shop not offer any help to speak of? They are the biggest dealer around Nashville that I am aware of.

From what I understand they were glad to help... to the tune of $300-$350 for the part alone, not including tax... but I didn't talk to them myself. I am just trying to help a friend and he is doing all the calling.

    WileECoyote,

First of have him call BGE!!! Explain the problem and let them know where the egg was purchased.

From my experiences with BGE they have been way more than fair with several problems I have had.

The price should not be as high as quoted in the above posts. If it is the small base only it can be purchased for $161.

You will have an email shortly.

If anyone has ever placed any Egg on a shelf or table sitting on it's little feet and really looked at it why on earth would one decide to leave it that way?

The Egg just looks like it would fall over! All of that bulk well above the center of gravity is a train wreck looking for a place to happen.

It's too bad it did happen and I hope the Mothership can help but, we're seeing a lot more of this type of issue lately than I recall seeing in the past.

I second the "Call Atlanta" suggestion. Talk to Bobby and just be honest.

A true friend would be suggesting he buy the nest this round.

Give me a call in Huntsville. I have a local place that may have a much better price than 300-350 for a small base. 256-858-5511

Ok gang, thanks so much for all the information and offers to help!

The good news: I received another message from my friend and the base for his small egg is NOT broken after all. So his new small is still looking and cooking good.

The bad news: the egg that broke was his large egg so I am sure that a replacement base for it will cost him even more to replace.

He has a nest for the large so I am not sure how he managed to break it. He was talking about making a table for the large and small to co-exist so maybe he was moving the large to start the project. At any rate he needs a new base for his large egg now and this was the part that he was quoted $250-$350 for locally, so about $275-$380 after tax.

Through some helpful info we found a place selling the large base for $245 but shipping is $45 so this is still $290 for a replacement part. Not that bad considering that a new large egg will run you at least $650 but I have seen some used large eggs selling in the $300-$500 range so he might decide to wait unless he can get a better deal on the new part. I passed on all the info that I received so he has several options thanks to all of your tips.

If anyone spots a used large egg or replacement base in the TN, KY, or AL areas then let us know. It would have to be close enough to Nashville or cheap enough to justify the cost of gas for the trip but I am sure he will take the first good deal that he can find.

That makes more sense. Tell him to try Summer Classic in Huntsville. Ask for Jimmy and he may be able to help. I have a friend that broke a large base and got a new one there.
