Last year bought a bag of Rancher natural charcoal briquettes. Were on sale at Home Depot for $2 or so. Put in back of garage and forgot. Found last Saturday and filled my small. What a bag of junk. Took 45 minutes to get to 750 for steaks. Used rest of week for lunch etc. Before the fill was gone there was so much ash I had to dump remaining out and clean. BEWARE

That's why you don't use briquettes in the Egg.

They were natural hardwood with no fillers, glue etc.

All briquettes make huge amounts of ash. This has nothing to do with the quality of the briquettes. The Rancher briquettes are pretty much about as good a briquette as you'll find. Wicked Good Charcoal briquettes have the lowest ash of the few brands I've played around with, but even they have a large amount of ash compared to lump. As far as I can tell, the ash comes from the binder. But there is no reason to be wary of these briquettes. Briquettes are just not appropriate for smaller ceramic cookers. The Naked Whiz

Yes, I agree, there is no use for these in the Egg, like the article says.
