I was in North Carolina a few years back when this bug landed on my van. It was pretty big and scary looking. I was in the area of Glass Mountain. It was Sept. Does anyone know what kind it is?

no, but did you TRex it or smoke it ?
-
ha- ten bucks says someone has an ABT recipe for this guy- finely ground in cream cheese, stuffed in jalapeno, wrapped in bacon. mmmm
-
I would spatchcock put a little rub on it an then slow roast over indirect heat for a minute.
-
I didn't realize the potential when I saw the bug. I didn't get my BGE until much later. Spatchcocked does sound like the way to go though.

It was colorful and big, the color just doesn't show up in the picture.

WOW! A great photog and an Entomologist. What else can RTD come up with to amaze us? I think it was a Carolina Sawyer. Oh, and a great cook on the egg too. Thanks Rick
Frank -
Least it landed on your car. First one I saw landed on me in Pisgah National Park.. I was about to bat it off when a park ranger told me it was just a Sawyer and it doesn't bite. The bug and I finished the hike together..
Not sure if it's edible though... -
Looks like a stink bug to me. Did you step on it?
-
That was what I thought too Bobby, but it isn't wide enough to be a stink bug. Has the same coloring though.
-
No,I let it live and was grateful it returned the favor.

not an entomologist... just an information junkie that likes bugs. i looked it up in my insect guide and then googled it to be more sure. thought it was a barklike longhorn at first, but those are only in arizona......
-
Rick, this is the second time you sent me a post with a link and the second time you had to tell me to check the link. I don't know why I can't seem to notice when there is a link. I'm going to try to do better.

Amazing

You're welcome.

Spring Chicken, My wife and I met you on the elevator last Oct. in Atlanta. You introduced you and your wife to us and asked if I was an egghead. I told you I was a new egger and this was my first Fest . I didn't come down to the after party Sat. nite because I felt like a stranger, but now I really wish I had. If gas prices aren't too high this fall I hope to see everyone again and be more sociable.

That's exactly what I was thinking and one of the last bugs I'd want spatchcocked in my egg.
-
Deffinitely it´s a "twig girdler".......any ortho book on insects would have its pic.......its a real son of a......b..ch.....it lands on a tree......goes to the twigs not more than 1" thick...cuts a ring around the twig...the twig dies and the sob puts its egs in it...........in the end the tree dies mostly of infection & disease.....i´ve had to cut several sick because of this pest....you should have squashed it hard!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :woohoo:
-
It really is a Sawyer and they lay there eggs in dead trees
-
It's one of a great many Long-Horned Beetles. Not sure which one. They lay eggs in hardwood trees which then become borers which haunt my wood working dreams. BTW, if you ever get one of these guys between your bare back and a pick-up seat....be prepared for a jolt. Voice of experience talking.

Hey... Yes, We remember you and will look forward to seeing y'all again at another Eggfest. Or if you're ever down in our neck of the woods come on by for a tour of the Chicken Ranch and Coop. I'm sure we can find something to do to entertain y'all... Maybe light a fire or two.
I hope you are enjoying your Egg. There plenty of opportunity to enjoy it for sure, and plenty of help if you need it.
Don't you just love being an Egghead...
Spring "The Welcome Light Is Always On" Chicken -
The order is Coleoptea (beetles - a huge order) and the family is Cerambycidae, long-horned beetles, also a big family. They are pests of trees as the adults lay their eggs in cracks and crevices in the bark. The larvae then bore into the wood. Some of the cerambycids are specific to specific trees, like the locust borer, the elderberry long-horn, or the cane borer.
They are real common in forests, and if you kick a dead log you will likely find some of their larvae - the large black or white grubs.
