Home made griddle
Mayberry Smoker
Posts: 64
I was thinking about making a griddle out of 1/4 or 3/8 steel, sandblasted then washed and then seasoned like a cast iron skillet. Would this work and if so would the thickness matter that much. I have a large so should I make it the same diameter as my cooking grate or a little smaller to allow for air flow around it. Thanks.

Mayberry Smoker,
Making a griddle will work fine. Yes, I would make it a little smaller than the grate for air flow. I would also make it out of half inch steel. Thicker is better with this application. No warping. I made one for my open burner cooker and also welded 1/4 sides around it to keep grease from going over the side. Go for it. You will enjoy using it. [p]Chef Jerry
