Is is necessary to remove all of the old gasket before installing the new one? If so, how is the easiest way to remove the old?

    Revolution,
Best to remove the old one first. Here is my "pat" answer to this question. I have used this method several times with great success :[p]Assuming you're not trying to do this on the XL, loosen the band on the top and remove the dome. Let the band open up, as in the lid open position, so you can have better access to the bottom gasket. Scrape the bottom gasket off with a putty knife or wood chisel. Clean as well as you can with alcohol (denatured, or rubbing) and remove as much as the old adhesive as you can by scraping and rubbing with the chisel and paper towels. Place the lid on the base in the inverted position and repeat the above instructions for removing the base gasket. Cut the new (replacement) gasket in two equal halves and apply one half to the lid, remove the lid and set aside. Apply the other half of the gasket to the base. Put the top band in the closed position at this point being very careful to apply the pressure on the hinge only and NOT on the band itself else it may bend. Put the lid in place, adjust the bands as you did in the original assembly, and tighten the band bolts. Don't cook on it for 24 hours minimum and you're good to go......

I have good luck just soaking the old gasket with Goof-Off remover, letting it set for about a minute and then just lifting the gasket off.[p]You will still have to soak/scrape/rub/burn the remaining adhesive off.[p]Toy Man

    Revolution,
Instead of cutting the new gasket in two equal parts, try replacing off the whole roll, unrolling as you go. This leaves more than enough left over to place a piece inside the ceramic cap to make a tighter and cushioned seal.

    FlaMike,
Good point! I've done this using my cutting technique, but had two pieces to seal the cap instead of one.

    egret,
Why didn't I think of that? 2 pieces just as good as one!
    Next time....
